Boss & Co first ever bolt actioned rifle 300 H&H
      #169139 - 08/10/10 02:50 AM

My hunting mate ordered this rifle from Boss & Co some time ago and these are the progress photo's as it was being built.
It is the first bolt rifle Boss & Co have ever built, and should be ready for delivery before Xmas if all goes well.
The tube in the scope mounts is to align and lap in the rings so as not to distort the scope when it is fitted.

That is so cool! Are bolt actions in .300 H&H difficult to find? Are any factory versions available?

That's a "Take Down" with real wood unlike the HS Precision which comes in synthetic stock. But .300 H&H is rare unless in a real custom model like this one. I think CZ did make one for a short time but I haven't seen one of late.

Watchyasaid, Ben!
Is it a scope at all or a rather large tube to line up the rings for a scope beyond dimensions known back when?

And apparently to lap the rings to accept the scope tube without distortion. Back then? Looks quite modern to me.

Does the barrel attach with interrupted threads or does it screw on?

I have a left handed Paul Jeager .300 H&H. Now that's very rare.

Coming along beautifully, but then, it is a Boss!

Thanks for sharing pics and I'm going to be watching this thread along with a lot of other members to see this beauty polished to perfection!

There seems to be some controversy about Boss bolt action rifles :-
Boss have only ever built "IN HOUSE" one bolt action rifle !
It is in 300H&H on a takedown action.
It is marked "FIRST BOLT ACTION RIFLE" Serial number "10300"
It has a good Australian home!

Just that cheekpiece would make me want to own it. Love that contemporary look.

Chap I know had a .470 double rifle made in 88 on a Holland & Holland action, Purdey barreled it, Brown brothers engraved it, then it was stocked in London and in exchange for a few thousand pounds Tim Robertson at Boss allowed us to put their name on it and enter it in the company records. It was a killer. I picked it up and took it to SCI Reno that year where it was sold within an hour.

I can't believe that monstrosity of a scope is going on such an elegant rifle. It will end up looking like a clipper ship under full sail, with all the attention drawn to the scope, instead of where it belongs, to the rifle. An illuminated reticle for plains game? Or does he plan to hunt in Germany and snipe his game out of a Hochsitz at twilight?

The size of the objectiuve lens dictates that the scope be mounted high enough to clear the barrel, and the size of the ocular lens dictates that the scope be mounted high enough to clear the bolt handle, which will put it far above the iron sight line of the elegantly proportioned stock, so the happy owner will have to shoot through the scope with his cheek barely touching the stock.

See if you can't talk him into a nice Leupold with a 32mm objective and a comparatively slim ocular. 4X is all you ever need in the game field, unless you're shooting prarie dogs. My Model 70 .300 H&H has a 4X Lyman All American sitting on it, and has accounted for around 100 head of African plains game.

What controversy is that?

I must say, I have never liked those big Swarovskis with that leaver on top. Like you, I would also select a 4x BUT it would be a German Schmidt&Bender over the Leopold. Some may say slightly under powered for a 300H&H though.

Oz Hunter,Boss have only ever built one bolt action rifle in house.Serial # 10300
Boss did however embellish ,modify ,restock or engrave the odd rifle for special customers.
That was the controversy....
Hope that clears up your question!

Alan

Had dinner with my hunting mate tonight, and one of the things we chatted about was "That Scope".....
It was actually Boss who selected that scope for the rifle not my mate.
When he saw it he told them to scrap it and wash their mouths out..
He described it as a microwave oven sitting on top of the rifle...
After reading all your comments above he agree's 100% with everything you have posted...
