P 14 p 17 Enfield actions
      #168197 - 22/09/10 05:18 AM

I was just wondering if the P14 p17 actions were ever uesed by H&H or any other English gun mankers after the first world war? And what they looked like?

I remember a .375 H&H rifle by Holland &Holland on a P14 action. They used these actions in the 1950s when original Mauser Oberndorf Magnum actions were not available any more and H&H was on hard times anyway. It looked similar to the prewar H&H product at first glance, but quality was much less: Trigger guard/mag assembly made from some light alloy and checkering pattern cut lopsided.

A top London gun maker using "light alloy"? Oh, please no!

Tom, while you are right in using P14 for the British rifle for the Pattern 1914, it is M17 for the US action for the Model of 1917.

Oh Yes, for sure! As I wrote, H&H was in difficulties at those times and they used anything that was available. I also remeber another H&H .375 from that time, built on an opened up military 98K action, apparently from a sniper rifle, as there were filled-in sidemount holes still visible. Alloy mag too! H&H even sold those mag boxes to other gunmakers, they were advertized in America, if I remember correctly, but I have to go through several meters of literature to retrieve the source.

Quote from Peter King's book:"The Shooting Field with Holland & Holland" on the W.J.Jeffery company in the 1950s:
"The effects of the Second World War reduced the business available for the (Jeffery) company and their 1949 ccatalogue reflected the change in fortunes, not only of the company, but also of the country. On offer were three A&D action guns, Models 1,2 &3. The top of the range were some .404 magazine rifles built on the P14 Enfield action for L75.
In 1955 a move was made to 5b Pall Mall ... Bolt action magazine rifles were still being built on the P14 action and were now available in a wider range of calibres, .275, .30-06 and .404 Magnum."

Cogswell and Harrison, though maybe not in the same league, did the same thing.

This is a .404 for sale on a gunmakers website. It is built on a P14 or M17 action with, as you can see, alloy bottom metal.

Here's mine, top one is a 450 Ackley Mag that started life as a 458 WM, and the second is a 500 Jeffery, and I'd post pictures of the newest pup, a 416 Ruger, but of course Weapons Licensing are stuffing me around on that one, and I don't have my permit yet, been 6 weeks next Monday, not happy Jan!

David

That Cogswell and Harrison is the only Enfield I've ever seen with a thumb cut-out. I wonder what the thinking behind it was, since a .404 is clearly not a stripper clip loader. Gas escape channel?

For the scared, hurried or ham fisted a thumb cutout helps make sure the top round is completely pushed down. I cut one in my MkX .458 as at one time or another I have fit all those catagories. It does work

Good plan, but since the Cogswell and Harrison stock partially obscures the cut-out, it's hard to see how it could successfully function that way. Mausers with cut-outs are generally stocked so as to expose the cut-out completely.

The thumb cut-out, while on a right handed rifle is for use with stripper clips, they are just the bees knees for us left handers when loading the magazine, especially under a scope. Much easier to position a big round on top of the follower and push down into the magazine using the thumb cut-out. Especially so on a Mauser where as xausa points out, the stock is cut away to fully expose the thumb cut-out.

Nice looking rifles. Why did I pass up so many P14 in my younger days.

Neale,
Sorry about the slow reply, went to the State BGR in Gladstone over the weekend.

Alan Swan did the barrel and feeding work on the 450, in the days "pre Jim". Unfortunately Alan is no longer doing much work, which is a real pity, as he had a knack for Big Calibre Rifles. Jim did the bolt handle and a bit of other work on it and Darryl did the stock for me.

Ummm, Yep!
11 Events, won 8 of them, 2nd in the other 3 and kept it all together for the Grand Agg.
(Got done in Rook and Rabbit Rifle by 2 points by a local shooter, about 75 years old and using a bloody 310 Cadet of all things!) A touch embarassing, but good to see.
A Good weekend.

David.

Phil,

That is one handsome full stock rifle, would have doubted an old enfield could look that good has I not seen the photo.
Great job to both you and your smith

Way to go David! Soemtimes the 'old' guys get in the way.

Sounds like a blast. Phill is spot-on about the looks of his 9.3! Not too shabby at all. Very nice.

My friend Keith's 8x68S in Bastone is really nice as well.

Also has one 6.5x68 - might be a couple of those in his locker, all on P-14's or P-17's.

I also barreled a P-14 & chambered up a standard .303 in a .308 bore for him to use 220gr. .308" Hornady's. At 2,200fps, they work very well indeed on moose. We don't have the pleasure of any 215gr. here. Woodleighs are strictly mail order - & too expensive.
