Gryph

The Smith & Weson .50 cal even appeared in our local internet press - see this ref New .50 Mag can kill a bear

Surprisingly it is also reasonably balanced with only a small bit of BS.

I think this new cartridge will be of limited interest in Australia especially considering our handgun laws where they are limiting calibre size and also hunting with them is not on.

This handgun would have some pretty hefty recoil

nitro when you say limited interest,i believe that just because of its size and soon to be ledgendary prowess talked up that the interest will be huge, big boys toys syndrome type of stuff. My mate in Texas has a 454 casull and he tells me that 20 shots is enough with sore wrists and always a headache(muffed up yes) he will probably get one of these 50`s and let me know about it too, cant see why someone hasnt made a 50cal bmg contender type of handgun--now that would be fun stuff i reckon for the big boys.

I own one The S&W 500. The next time I go Bear hunting I'll have it with me,But for now I shoot it at the range. At 200yds there's a gong I shoot Its doesn't have bad recoil with the 270gr bullet or the 320gr bullet. The 400 has a some recoil. The gun doesn't come up at you when fired it pushes streight back. Weighs 5 lbs.

Yeah this seems to be the general veiw I've heard. Because the gun is so heavy the recoil is not as bad. Aparently the recoil with some of the new tiny .357s is actually worse due to the almost non-existant weight (small gun size not bullet size). For the information of any Australians who wish to know, ALL handguns are banned from use OUTSIDE A PISTOL CLUB unless you have a special handgun hunting license which are VERY hard to come by. If you wish to use one in a club, think again .38 is now the largest legal calibre. But it is still cool to find out about, even if we have to go to the US to shoot one, which I plan to do some day. These are a very impressive gun and I would buy one in a second given a chance...

Just purchased a 500 Linebaugh for bear protection during backcountry fishing/camping/working trips. This is a Ruger Redhawk that Hamilton Bowen built. 3 1/2" barrel.

D, that is a purty gun. Hamilton Bowen does seem to make some real nice conversion revolvers, doesn't he. I think that with a 5-shot cylinder and 3 1/2", that's going to be a handful. Are you going to load it down for controllability? My wrist and elbow are already hurting just thinking of the recoil with full loads. I think I'll just stick with my 475L in my FA83.

It is going to be a big handful. I'll start low and work my way up to heavy loads. Practice, practice, practice. Should be ideal for its purpose. Not going to be fun at the range, though.

In that case, load to top 50 Spl. loads when starting out. After your nerve endings in your hand and arm get toughened up and quit twitching with so much fun, then go to low-med 500L loads. Remember that John Taffin fractured the small bones in his hand with max 500 loads including the 475 Maximum. Now that's got to hurt. Hell, whenever I have an inattentive moment with my 475, I lose some skin in the process. It's just so much fun, NOT.

Nice gun, recoil would be a real pain though, literally. How much does it weigh? Are you going to put a compensator or muzzle break or port the barrel or anything like that???

I've never weighed my Freedom Arms revolver. The brochure says it weighs around 4# and change. Recoil is noticeable, it just rotates up around 100 degrees. The single action handle is the best at not hurting your wrists and not transferring shock all the way back to your elbow. One of these days, I'll get the barrel lopped off to 5 1/2" for easier carry and have it MagnaPorted.

I'm going to work at shooting it a while before making any changes. At least through this summer. If I can't control it at the loadings I've used 500 L's in the past, I'll send it in for porting. I want to work with it quite a bit first. These things take some getting use to, but with a lot of work and practice, can be controlled. If it can't, it'll get ported.

I have just ordered a Smith & Wesson .500S&W revolver which is a major leap from my Colt .44Mag Anaconda and I know CorBon makes ammo but does anyone know if any one else makes ammo? Thanks

I believe Tim Sundles at Buffalo Bore is making 500 S&W ammo. Cor-Bon is probably following suit. There are a few custom ammo shops here in Alaska making loaded also.

I haven't checked into it very much, but would guess that it can be handloaded much cheaper than factory loads.

I have the S&W 500 and I reload all my rounds. I think Midway sells 500 loaded ammo.

Several range sessions later with the above pictured 500 Linebaugh and it is in fine form. Using 440 grain WFN at ~1250 fps and 525 grain WFN at ~1150 fps.

Accuracy is superb and very controllable. Recoil is more straight back than anything (allowing for a faster target reacquistion). Muzzle rise is not more than 3-4" with the 525 grain loads. It does have some backward slap, but not too punishing. Easy to fire 20-25 shots before my hand starts to become sensitive. Overall, an outstanding handgun.

With my S&W 500 I shot the 400gr , 500gr bullets thru my conagraph and got these figures the 400 did 1620,1613, and the 500 did 1419 fps. Not bad huh?

I think the S&W big fifty is a fine handgun and round. I have yet to hear one complaint about the S&W X Frame or the performance of the round.

Up to .45 cal is still being used in western action and silhouette legally.

What does the new 4" .500 weigh? It should be a handfull!! At least it would be packable. I used to own a Linebaugh built .45. We shot 310 Gr. cast at about 1450 as a steady diet. It was a lot of fun once you got used to it. I think I will wait for a single action before I buy a .500 though. they are a loy easier on the hand!

Hi

My opinion was BFR .500 magnum and it really is excellent gun, extremely accurate and reliable weapon for game shooter.
And if load your ammo your self you can achieve lots more power, over 5kjs.

RLI, I don't think Colt make the Anaconda in .44Mag anymore. Do you know why ? I really like that revolver but would like it in .44 mag which is difficult, best, Mike

I finally fired mine for the first time today(it only has the 4 inch barrel) and with 400grin pills at 1550fps it was suprisingly tame! I have loaded up some 350grain hollow points and will give these a go on some pigs hopefully monday, cant wait to see what it does! Ill keep you posted.
