Thanks for posting. I had this built to hunt Elephant. Four weeks to go and off to Mozambique. Karena Clode from Westely Richards, helped every step of the way, the rifle exceeded my expectations and I cant wait to try it out!

Nice rifle Bruce!

I especially like the grip-cap trapdoor.
It's 'totally 1974'!!

Good luck to you on the hunt in Mozambique.
Can't wait to see the photos from the field and to hear your stories.

Cheers

Beautiful rifle all the way. Good luck for elephants in Moza. The Gibbs .505 was meant for elephants from its day its was designed.

It seems the Brits have not lost their touch! The rifle is a work of art, and I very much look forward to reading about what it is like on the range, and how it does on the trail after buff and ele.

The extra deep magazine box is not only very attractive, but very comforting on a hunt. I shot a handful of ele cows with 4 shot mag box plus one in the barrel, and I definitely liked the idea of an extra round.

The wood on your gun is gorgeous. Heck, it bet the blank alone was 5K or more.

Also, they have gotten the bolt handle right, which not that many gunmakers can do these days.

Congratulations on owning a great piece of art and a practical piece as well.

Thanks all for all the comments. It was always a dream to have dangerous game rifle although it most certainly is hard to really justify a 505 Gibbs that is so limited in its application. It was built purely as an Elephant gun which makes it even harder, as even in Africa, its use is somewhat limited. It usually also means I have to travel with two rifles and normally take the .375 H&H along as well. And yes, the hand was most definitely shaking when I had to write the cheque out. My wife still gives me that evil stare every time it is mentioned; somewhat akin to the look a Buffalo gives you at close range…

With a passion for big bore bolt actions, I love function, dependability and hunting with something a little traditional and special. The 505 probably turned out a little more ornate than I had first visualized and it was only after coaxing from Karena Clode at Westely Richards that I allowed the gold and border engraving. I’m glad I did as it’s simple and not over done.

I have put quite a few rounds through it in practice now, Norma PH, 600 gr, 2100 fps with 5877 ft-lbs of energy. Even in an 11 lb rifle that equates to a fair boot in the shoulder. As I practiced it got easier and I would describe it as manageable. I know I won’t even feel it in the scrub. Long range shots are not really my thing, but at less than 25m on Elephant and Buffalo, it should be awesome!

Three weeks out, the .505 and I will be on Safari and in action against Bull Elephant and Buffalo. Hopefully Ill have some better photo of the rifle to post once it has ‘walked in the footsteps of the giants’

Happy hunting everyone

That is fine in more ways than I count! Love the extended mag, the case colors, the border engraving, the grip cap, the stock layout, and much more! Looks like a great handling rifle. How about telling us about your experience making the choices you made and ordering the rifle from W/R?

Thanks mate, but this gun will never be for sale. Talk to the kids in 20-30 years or so....
