Online Article - "Romance of the Double Rifle"
      #163537 - 07/07/10 03:40 AM

A new article added to the "Nickudu Files - Vintage books and articles":

"Romance of the Double Rifle" by Tony Sanchez-Arino

Despite my forty-six years as a professional
elephant hunter in Africa, having
seen hundreds of weapons and used many
of them, every time that I get in my hands
a double rifle my mind always asks the
same silent question: "What fantastic histories
would tell to us if he were able to
speak. .? "

No doubt that the double rifles are the
most sporting and romantic rifles among
all the weapons employed by the yesterday
and today's big game hunter, amateur
or professional, specially developed for
sporting hunting purposes ....

... the double barrelied
rifles came to perfection at the same time
as the great era of exploration, colonial
conquerors and great tropical hunts leaving
behind them the most vivid tales of
their use and successin the pursuit of elephant,
tiger, rhino, buffalo, ...

From about 1900 the double rifle has
hardly altered in any essential detail. The
style of finishing has changed a little, but
the basic mechanism has remained the
same.

To own a double rifle is the "golden
dream" of every devoted hunter ...

Absolutely!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Do you agree?

Or is it actually only a luxury item owned for its quaintness these days, rather than a real hunting tool?

I hunt with mine. The last three deer I've taken have been with my Purdey .500 BPE, A. Henry .577 BPE, and A. Henry .450 BPE.

Several years ago I took two bears in Northern B.C. with my J. Winkler .300 double, and I took a deer with that rifle a year or so before that.

I took a deer with my Merkel .500 NE several years ago, and just last fall I shot a groundhog in the head with that rifle. Full power loads in both instances, BTW.

The Winkler wears a 1.5-5 scope. Each of the other kills just mentioned was without scope. In recent years almost all my shooting has been done with DR's and iron sights.

So I do agree with the first statement and disagree with the contrary statement.

(I haven't read the article yet. Just commenting on your queries.)

My 10bore is actually a little too big for Danish game..however if I have had a .577 BPE...I would use a double more regulary.
For me the doublerifle is luxury..but very useful luxery. Regardless ho many many doubles I get to own, there will always be aleast one good boltaction rifle ready to go.

Do I agree? Well yes!. The doublerifle a specialized tool for the devoted hunter, but not all hunters dream of such gun regardless how devoted they may be. If i was called in for gamecontrol(Africa) this minut..it would be my magnumm-mauser in.416Rigby + a beltful of cartridges.
Tony Arino however have had so many more oppotunities to use a doublerifle then I will ever get in a lifetime, so natually, he has found its real purpose + romance. For me..its just romance and later
an arranged hunt in Africa, that will give me a little blood on the lips.

I think a good big double is not a "luxury" at all, but a very modern tool for hunting the biggest of nasties especially at close range or the thick stuff.

Medium bore doubles also IMO remain the ideal tool for hunting running game such as driven boar, deer and the like. And versatile for many other hunting opportunities as well.

The one hundred year old design in my opinion remains a very modern tool. [image]http://forums.nitroexpress.com/images/graemlins/smilies/general/xyxthumbs.gif

John, I think you know enough about me that you already know the answer to that question!

.....................I absolutely agree with Tony's take on the double rifle, and I don't think a double rifle is a luxury at all if you want to hunt the bite-backs, but simply the best tool for the job! These days I hunt almost exclusively with double rifles. I don't think I have fired any other type of rifle in several years!

Hey man, you're not a member of the Hell's Angels, are you?

Are there wild boar in your neck of the woods, rigbymauser? I once read a book from about 1904 by a guy named Wynn. His favorites for boar hunting were a 6.5 MS and a 4-bore double rifle.

Cheers
