A William Cashmore Hammer Gun
      #157869 - 30/03/10 02:04 PM

I bought this thing sight unseen over the phone.

It's much as I imagined, and for $AU150 you can't expect too much.

It has been played with somewhat, the re-blueing is a bit of a mess and some surface rust is showing along the edges of the ribs, probably because of the blueing. The hammers don't match, and as you can see it has no firing pin assembly on the left barrel. The locks seem to work ok. It's a bit loose. The barrels are 31". It has a Greener style crossbolt.

Let's call it a project gun.

Can anyone tell me anything about this gun, or about Cashmore in general?

It's black powder post 1868, right?

There should be four photos above.... do they show up?

Hi. All the photos show fine. William Cashmore guns were popular in Australia; this country was a major market for them, selling to the colonials. I have a little bit of info, but not much, but will have a go at posting it in the next few days, along with some pics of my Cashmore hammergun. Good luck with "the Project".

9dot,

Nice buy. I would like to source a nice old 12 gauge vintage hammer shotgun myself to shoot BP loads in, Vintagers etc.

dgr375,

Very nice. It looks much better with the colour case hardened finish.

There's not much information about William Cashmore, gunmaker.

Charles E. Carder in his book, "Side by Sides of the World", just says "He made high quality trap and pigeon grade guns. His guns were advertised as the 'Cashmore Nitro gun'".

Terry Wieland, in "Vintage British Shotguns", says a bit more. The relevant scanned page is linked below.

If anyone has more information I would love to hear it; the more info the better, please!

Btw, mine has the serial number "6859", which seems like quite a low number. You can just make it out here...

Also, is this interesting, or at all relevant??.......

From The Argus (Melbourne) 8th January 1889....

How about that? You could buy them at McEwans hardware in Elizabeth street!

And in The West Australian, August 31st 1892.....

It looks like a nice gun, Merkel.

A lady I know over here is descended from the Cashmores and has mentioned an interest in getting one as a keepsake. So, if you lose interest in this particular project, let me know.

Not as far as I know, Merkel, just that her mother carried the name and was related.
