New Hagn Dodd Hughes
      #156148 - 11/03/10 07:33 PM

Hi all, 3 years ago I got interested in the Martini Hagn action, the one used by Holland for Grenadiers rifle. I went out to Montana to visit a gunsmith whose books I admired, Mr Steve Dodd Hughes. I stayed in Livingstone for a couple of days and had a blast, Steve let me loose with all his handguns, a lot of fun for me as handguns are a no go in UK Anyway the upshot was I ordered a slighly modified MH action (stronger ejector, bottom lever reshaped) and after a long time (Steve is an author and photographer as well) we are getting there. It should be ready for engraving in Autumn. Here are a few pics, I will try to post pics of the action later

best, Mike

Very nice, Mike.

That fore end cap looks as though it grew on to the stock.

Stunning! Time to start serious safari planning! With the Hagn .30-06 and a pair of H&Hs in .500NE and .375 you really can hunt the world!

All, here are the latst pics from Steve, just fore end stuff but still intersting to me. Odd thing is, when I went to meet Steve I had some set ideas about where to get a blank. He had about 15 on hand and said, "This will be good Mike". (Forgive the following Steve, I hope if he is watching this forum he doesn't send me a nasty email !) I was frankly underwhelmed by the blank he wanted to use, it looked a bit "plain Jane" to me but as usual, what the hell do I know It looks great now to my eyes, best, Mike

Beautiful rifle to be....thanks for sharing the photos. You chose your gunmaker wisely. Steve is one of the nicest, talented(perhaps I should say gifted) artists I've met. So many can be a bit full of themselves. He was nothing but gracious, when I had the pleasure of meeting him. Look forward to seeing the finished product!

Jeff

Congrats on the rifle it is looking wonderful. Quite a treat when a craftsman allows his work to be photographed and shared. Thanks for posting these as I love a work in progress! Looks like a dandy piece of walnut as well. Will be watching for any new developments.

That is the makings of a seriously nice rifle from a gunmaker I have long admired.

I look forward to more progress photographs.

Congratulations Mike.

Best wishes, Chris

He likes it so much he put his initials on it instead of yours.

I like watching good things come together.

Lovely work on a special rifle. Steve has the tallent & skill necessary to be a master at properly making muzzleloading rifles - that, my friends is high praise.

Who did the engraving and colours?

tks Mike.
The colours 'are' subdued - some of Turnbulls that I've seen are rather loud for my tastes. Those are particularly nice with lots of brown & softer blues. I really like it.

Coming along magnificently - even in a gun case with as distinguished a collection as yours, this will add immense sparkle!

Waiting for more pics, of course, and thank you for sharing these.
