Heym or Verney Carron
      #154958 - 27/02/10 12:41 PM

I'm real close to buying my first Double Rifle in 450 3.25 Nitro Express. I have narrowed the choice down to a Heym PH or Verney-Carron. I'm leaning toward the Heym.

How do these two rifles brands compare?

Thanks!!!

A buddy of mine used to have a Heym .470 NE. He said of all the doubles HE ever shot, it was his favorite.

How much difference in price btw??

I just ordered a VCarron - havent really shot a Heym before that I remember... hard to make a comparison. Difficult to fault the Heym of course, and the Verney Carron seem to be gaining quite a good reputation.

I sure liked the feel of them...,

Congratulations on narrowing it down to two! I would highly recommend trying to handle and shoot each if possible. That will be the best way to make the decision. I think it likely that one will just feel "right" for you.

I would take the Heym myself out of the two.

I handled both at DSC. I would go with the Heym.

A good job of finishing the outside will only take you so far in picking a good Double. For the kind of money we are speaking of I think I would insist on seeing the inside also if I was dealing with the unfamiliar, or a product that has a modest reputation in the past.

We've all heard of the Pearls on a Pig analogy.

triple lugs ,metal to wood fit great, wood selection great.balance good.but i guess in some peoples mind if its not english its not quality, hum.and the inside im not sure what you mean how much of a double can you see,i guess it come to lock choice box lock or what ever your personal choice may be but even the ugly baikal worked well for me.time will tell but we will all be gone when those facts come in

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either.

I have owned many Heym's and currently own several. I currently own one V-C in .577 and have a bespoke .500 due to be delivered in April.

All that being said, I truly believe the Verney Carron to be the best value out there in today's market.

Definitely Heym.

There are some stories floating about concerning VC rifles needing serious repairs after not much shooting. If those stories are accurate, well, it would be a PITA to deal with.

Heym are slender and light.

Can you give me any info on that... not just hearsay but actually someone who this has happened to?? I would be interested to find out. The information I have is the exact opposite and that has been backed-up elsewhere. That there are a number of shooters putting serious numbers of rounds through them and no problems!!

I dont think anyone can fault the heym - it has the quality and reputation!! and the VC is yet to prove itself to many.

Anyone tell me what the diff in price is??

I have probably fired 300 to 400 rounds through my VC .600 without any problems. I say don't believe everything you hear out there. I am obviously bias, but I would say that I much prefer the look and feel of the vc compared to the heym. I think heyms are overpriced. In fact, out of curiousity, I am going to contact Ken Bush and Kebco just to see if there have been any complaints about the VC. I bet there have not.

500grains, please substantiate the hearsay if you can. I have been closely following the V-C guns for 3 years now and have not heard of a single "serious repair" needed. Perhaps you are confusing the V-C with all of the Searcy repairs.

As for the Heym's being light, you will hear no argument from me. That is exactly why I sold one .470 and two .500's. They were too damn light for calibre. My V-C .577 weighs 14# 2oz. and I have ordered my V-C .500 to weigh in between 11.5 and 12#. To each his own.

I don't think you will hear of any major problems from Heym or Verney Carron. It's just personal preferance.

I do personally know of 2 serious VC problems, but unless the owners of those rifles choose to step forward, I am afraid I will have to leave it at that. I hope your VC will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

I like the Heym but have no experience with the Verney. However I have heard of problems with the Heym. I think you will hear problems with all of them so just pick the one that feels right for you.

The Heym rifles appear well made but when it came time to purchase I chose Verney-Carron over Heym. I do not regret that choice. Both manufacturers have made a lot of rifles and I would be surprised if there had not been one or two problems with either brand. Nothing is 100%. What matters is how well the manufacturer handles a problem if and when it occurs. I have no experience with Heym so I can neither praise nor condemn them. Additionally, I have had no reason to contact Verney-Carron about problems with my gun because there are none.

Nevertheless, I will give my nod again to the Frenchmen. I do so because I know how much they care about their products. My gun was ordered through, and after considerable communication with, Mr. Guillaume Verney-Carron. He followed it from conception to delivery. We emailed back and forth for several weeks and we met three times. Our most recent face-to-face was at the last SCI Convention. He introduced me to his father and told him I had purchased a gun. His father nodded and smiled kindly. Then Guillaume mentioned the engraving on the rifle I had ordered. His father's face lit up and he began speaking with great animation. He not only remembered the rifle but he was beaming with pride. Each of the guns they make carries their family name. I have no doubt that, should you ever need to send a gun back for work, Verney-Carron would stand by their products as if each gun represented the family.

Every maker has problem guns. I doubt even the best English don't have the odd problem.

Agreed. Though, I have no personal knowledge to back it up, it only makes sense.

Gents:
If it is not English, well.......

I have handled both makes and feel both are excellent modern-day products. The best tip above was to see if you can shoot either and see for yourself the fit, accuracy, balance, etc.. I would be they would be nearly equal. If that is so, then to me it would come down to price.

Cheers,
Cal

A Verney-Carron starts at $11,000 and the Heym $17,000.

I am very fortunate. I am not a rich man, but my budget allows me to buy most any gun I wish.

That being said, I choose the Verney-Carron, especially with the price difference. The V-C is the best value out there.

I have shot with both. The quality of a Heym outstands Verney-Carron.
