I think that rifle, with the hammer on the right side, is designed for a lefty, is it not?

Just the opposite. You want the hammer and the percusion cap away from you face and eyes.

I thought I read someplace once that the hammer was on the opposite side from where you might think on these Henrys to make it easier to reload - but I couldn't find the reference.

Actually, the military NSW issue AH rifles had the hammer on the left side, muzzle pointing away - this in order to facilitate loading. However, all sporters had the hammer on the 'normal' side. So Hobie did have a point there. I know of a gentleman who owns a cased 577/500 AH (Manton, Calcutta) in mint condition... What a beaut!

Actually the website that lists this particular rifle lists it as a .577/.500, a .577 in the description, and the photos were titled 577450.
Take your pick.

See this Alexander Henry military rifle for an example of the left hand hammer.
