I was thinking of building a 450-400 3" on a TCR. Does anyone see why this would not be a good fit for this action? What weight barrel should I shoot for? Do you think the recoil will be to brisk? I shoot a 11 3/4 lb. 450-400 double and recoil is no problem but want this to be 9 1/2 lbs. and I worry about recoil as I had a box put in my chest this summer and do not want to pull any wires out. I need a couple of projects this winter and this would be an easy one as I already have the reamer from the double build and an extra 12ga barrel to convert. Has any one shot the Ruger #1 in 450-400? How is the recoil(any more than a 3" 12ga load)?
Your reference to having a box fitted in your chest reminds of reading once about a 96 year old English woman, one of the landed gentry, who got her pacemaker fitted on the opposite side of her chest to that where it is normally fitted so she could carry on with her passion for shotgunning gamebirds. She had been advised that once fitted with a pacemaker (presume from this it is on the right side of the chest?), recoil from a gun would not be ideal so hence her instruction to the surgeon. I would think the recoil from a 9.5lb TCR in 450-400 would be getting up on the brisk side. My Mauser 404 in that same weight lets you know it means business when firing off the full power 400gr loads.
Mine is a defibulator on left side, I shoot right handed. I have shot about 800 12ga rounds at trap since ,no problems. 9.3x74 in Ruger #1 also ok. 450-400 just a fun cal. I think I will find a barrel blank and give it a try. Dale
