Hello Folks,

Does anybody have any experience with these bullets? How do they hold together at high impact speeds?

Tatume - I've used the 400gr. SSSP with both .032" and .049" jackets (1970's) and trusted it completely on bear and moose, driven at over 2,000fps from my 2" Amercian. Deep penetration and mostly exits with 2 1/2" to 3" exit holes on moose with the .049's) I would have preferred if Barnes would have kept the .049" jacket, the .032" seem to be OK at 2,150fps initial vel.

My problem with the 300gr.SSSP is it is so short, that any expansion (and that's going to happen quickly) is going to leave very little or no shank left to hold the core. Thus, I didn't use them or even try 'em. I was concerned it was too short to give the penetration I wanted for moose and bear - however, it would be dynamite on deer, perhaps hogs - light stuff. I think you'd want to stay well away from any eating part of the animal.

The original 400gr.SSSP is a wonderfully accurate bullet. All 3 .458's, a pair of 2" and a .458 Alaskan put them into 1/2" to 5/8" groups at 100 meters off the bags, driven from 2,150fps to 2,400fps. The BC is .389 as well, so they're quite flat shooting compared to most .458 projectiles, and with a 3" high 100 yard zero, makes for an easy 300 yard deer, moose or elk bullet. I'd go with 400's.

Hi Daryl,

I'm planning to try the bullets in the smokeless muzzleloader Tom Post built for me. Tom says the sabots will not withstand the stresses associated with bullets heavier than 300 gr. So, I'm going to try the 300 gr Original bullets. I'm glad to hear that the 400 gr bullets worked well for you; perhaps the 300s will do for me too.

Tatume,

You may already know that Speer makes a bonded core 300 grain .458 HP. I have a box to use in my .450 BPE, but I have yet to try them. It's reputed to be quite a bullet.

Hi Curl,

No, I did not know that. It may be exactly what I'm seeking. Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving.

P.s., I couldn't find them on the Speer website. Where did you locate them?

I used the Barnes Original 300gr. in my 450 BPE a bit. I don't know about higher speeds but in the 1700-1800 fps range they did fine. Killed a number of deer with them and had no problems, stayed together well and had complete pass throughs consistently without a lot of bloodshot meat.

Tom,

I got the 300 grain Speer bonded bullets from Midway:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=930537

It's funny, the website doesn't make much fuss about it being a bonded bullet.

Here are photos of the package:

I haven't even opened the box yet and haven't tried the bullets. Reports on the Midway website are glowing. Get some to try, and tell us about it here.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving also. I ate too much!

Best,
Curl

Looks like it might be a good bullet for slow twist .458's - perhaps as good as th Nosler Partition, and likely a lot less expensive.
