Savage Long Range Hunter 6.5/284
      #144625 - 28/10/09 02:40 PM

Just saw an article that Savage is coming out with a new rifle called the "Long Range Hunter" ..in which one of the calibers offered is the 6.5-284. Rifle had an ajustable stock, twist on/off brake, accutrigger and 24" button rifled barrel.

Some groups fired measured .40 at 100 yards..--handloads --factory loads produced .75---
weight w/o scope--8.75 lbs..so no sheep hunting rifle--but good for the prairie or shooting out of a stand..price--$664..Heck of a deal for the $$...

G'Day Fella's,

Ripp the 6.5-284 is another compact Power House cartridge.
A number of what I can "Long Rangers" (Bench Rest shooters that shoot 500 meter and 1000 yard BR matches), use this cartridge in both Savage Model 12 (?) and custom built rifles. The only shortcoming of this cartridge is, that these Long Ranges are only getting 700 odd shots out of a barrel before the accuracy starts to drop off. But at the prices you mentioned, that really isn't to much of a problem.
The other bonus with the Savage Barrel Attachment Concept is, that you get a couple of spare barrels (from www.sharpshootersupply.com) and a Barrel Nut Spanner and just screw another one in!

I have a sleeved Rem 700 switch barrel rifle in .22-250 AI and I am interested in joining these Long Rangers to do a bit of 500M and 1K BR work.
To do this, I will need another barrel for this rifle and the 6.5-284 was one of my first thoughts?
I've been talking to some of the regular top Long Rangers and the 6mm BR was also mentioned! So.....................???

Ripp, at that price, you can't go wrong!
And I'm of the opinion that Savage at present, are making the Best Firearms that they have ever made!!!

Don't know if that was of much help to you?

Also, I've always wanted a 6.5-06 Hunting Rifle!?!
The 6.5mm, really is a very underrated bullet diameter!!!

The 6mm BR and the 6mm International (.22-.250 opened to 6mm) are gaining quite a following in F-Class (1000 yard target shooting using bipods or sandbags) and 1000 BR competition for just the reason you mentioned: barrel life. Be sure to get a twist quick enough to stabilize the long bullets used at those ranges.

I actually picked up a Savage F-Class in 6.5-284 this past year--still in the box in my gun room..being forced to deal with other personal issues at the moment..

Read on Savage's web-site today that the rate of twist is 1:8..on that particular rifle..

I'm thinking this is the right way to go.

6.5x55 and 6.5'06 should be 1/8 IMO, x.284 ditto. The .264 Mag with a little more start speed seems right with 1/9.

A friend's 6.5x68, with 10" twist doesn't want to shoot anything longer than the 120gr. TSX (same length as normal 140gr. lead cored bullets). The 130's and 140 TSX are not stabilzed at over 3,000fps in this 'slow' twist, yaw and tumble.
The 120gr.TSX, although lighter for normal big game weight in this calibre, will lengthwise hole a moose, one end to the other from 300 meters. Moose refuse to take another step when you do this.

Herein lies the reason I've never owned a rifle chambered for 260 Remington. Only the Ruger has rifling that is fast enough. When Remington introduced the cartridge in their line, they used 1:8.5" rifling, which is appropriate, but they tried to go too fast. Complaints about high pressure with 140 gr bullets surfaced, and rather than load to appropriate speeds, they dropped the bullet weight and changed to 1:9" rifling. Now the heaviest bullets their guns will handle are 120 gr. The Ruger, with appropriate rifling, has a 16.5" barrel, which is too short, even for me.

my 6,5-284 Norma had 1-8,5 and worked well with 140-155 grain bullets and I would not choose a barrel shorter than 26 inches - might as well have a 6,5x55 and burn less powder.

My next 6,5 will be a 6,5X64 Brenneke, simple to get brass for and no feeding problems. My old 6,5X64 Brenneke was phenomenal, it was "best" with 140-155 grain bullets and 1-8 in twist.

First, my opinion; I want a quick twist in a 6.5. I've always lamented the tendency of American cartridge designers to go slow. Think what a 1/7.5 would make the .243. I have always wondered about such a rifle with 135 grain bullets... Or a .25-06 with a 1/8 and 140 grain bullets. Or a .270 w/ 1/8.5 and 180 grain bullets. Nobody, not even Elmer, could spit on that combination for elk!

But reading Ness' book recently, I see why they did what they did. But I don't have to like it.

Anyway, the quick twist was one reason I selected Ruger's {1/8}. I own three of them. If I could own one rifle only for where I live, it would be one of them.

Having said that, and fearing the worst but hoping the best, I bought a CZ550 in 6.5x55 with 1/9. I got the best, as far as accuracy is concerned. But the gun is now a 9.3x62, so other issues turned the barrel into a cheater bar. But relevant to the discussion here, anyway, accuracy was superb with all long 140's and 160's, even with the slower 1/9.

At the higher velocity that the .264 generates, the 1/9 of my Ruger has worked out very well, with three shot groups going well below 1 inch at 100 meters and 1.5 MOA at 300 meters. I think the "point 5" extra at 300 is me.

Everybody's opinions on these things are valid of course, but as for stubby 6.5's, I chopped the barrel on one of my Rugers to 17 inches and everyone that picks it up and/or shoots it makes me an offer.

The original-military calibers were often made with quick twists to insure accuracy with worn bores and for long tracer and other light-core bullets. I suppose that means that oftimes there is a bit of wiggleroom. But I still like the tight twists. The Europeans with their generally tighter twists were smarter than our guys. Just might opinion...

My CZ550 FS in 6.5x55 has 1:8.7" rifling. It shoots 140 gr Sierra SBT very well indeed.

Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to try one of those Ruger Compacts after all.

The 6.5 x 284 is a fine long range cartridge but it will burn out the barrel quickly especially if you have it loaded hot. A very good alternative is the 260 Ackley Improved (308 case with 40 deg shoulder). Almost the same velocity with lower pressure. That caliber is winning most matches down here at 560 yards and 1000 yards. I have over a 1000 rounds through mine without a loss of accuracy or throat erosion.

I don't think 260 Ack imp, loaded under 65K psi with 26 inch barrel, can achieve 3050-3100fps with 140grain bullets like the 6,5-284 Norma or 6,5-64 Brenneke does. I know 139's can reach 2900fps. 243win with 115 grain bullets loaded to 3100-3150fps will be even better for long range target shooting. Easy to find brass for and no forming or worry about doughnuts, reaming etc.

I am getting 2950 fps with 140 grain Remingtons in my 24" bbl Ruger .264 Mag, for comparison.

G'Day Fella's,

Well Ripp, there is no shortage of support for the 6.5mm in various case sizes.
I hope your personal issues are nothing to serious and soon resolved!!!

Just remembered (Thank You Johan), I still have a few loaded .260 AI cartridges from a BRNO 601 that went through the shop when I was working at S.W.W. here in Canberra.
Very Business Like little cartridge!
