Off to the Land of the Vikings!
      #142309 - 19/09/09 03:11 AM

In about a week's time I'm off to the Land of the Vikings.

A couple of very nice forumites invited me to visit and with enough air-miles I couldn't say no. Plus the chance to hopefully snap a cap or two off in a new Rigby shotgun (hoping!?) at some feathered creatures and maybe participate in the moose hunting season.

Norway and Denmark are on the agenda, and it will be nice to catch up with Erik and Peter.

i think it should be doable to find a pheasant or two, for you to have fun with along with a new rigby
i also think that roebuck will be on the agenda, when you come, as they are really hard to stalk this time of year.

i am really looking forward to be spending time with you here in the cold north

best

Hope you get to fish for salmon in the River Tana with local Saami. Maybe ask at the Tromso cultural centre for local advice?

That unfortunately will have to be for later visit, as John will be occupied in the southeastern part of Norway hunting Capercaillie, Black Grouse, and moose.

Although nothing is ever guaranteed when hunting these species, I certainly hope I'll be able to present some chances at each for him.

Erik:

Do you hunt capercaillie and grouse with rifle or shotgun or both?

We use both rifle and shotgun for grouse here, shotgun for turkey.

How big are capercaillie? About the size of this turkey or a bit smaller?

Not a good picture, but here's my son yesterday with a small turkey he shot, and a ruffed grouse also. Sorry the birds don't show up too well, but we were having trouble keeping the hound at bay...

If you visit many of the mansions and palaces (of "old" Europe) there are many capercaillie mounted on the walls as it was (or is) evidently regarded as a difficult "trophy" to hunt.

Looking forward to it.

What!? No moose tied to a tree conveniently for me?

Ha ha. I think it will be great fun just being there and getting to participate and join in the experience.

I agree with this.

The Norwegians, Swedes and Finns have a hunting culture that is second to none.

I really do wish you all the best.

Just remember, John, bring a few bottles of your best!

Erik:

Around here we generally use a shotgun. Either while using English Pointers, or by walking up the birds without a dog.

Unfortunately, I had to put my 9 year old pointer Tiko down the day before the season started. He injured his left front leg 3 years ago, and it has caused him trouble and pain since. The pain was obviously so bad that we decided that it would be better for him to be put to sleep.

As we knew this was coming, I arranged to take over a 3 year old pointer from a friend of ours. However, just a week before the season, she tore one of her front claws off, which means she won't be able to hunt for several more weeks. Thus I have been left with no dog, and have just been walking up and stalking birds this year.

A black grouse I shot on the first day of the season. This one was playing his mating song up in a treetop, which is not common at this time of the year, but not totally unheard of. As they are unaware of their surroundings while they at making their mating noises, this is the time to move. The second they stop, which they do every minute or so, you have to freeze in position as the slightest movement will make them fly off. I was able to do this for 20-30 minutes, and eventually get so close to the tree that I was only 10 meters or so away. Just as I was taking a step to the side to get a clear shot, it stopped for several minutes, clearly suspicious of what was going on. I had my legs crossed, and my shotgun halfway up when it stopped, almost as in a some kind of yoga position. I was just about to fall over from the cramps in my legs as it suddenly continued to play it's mating song, and was thus able to take the last half step to the side into the open and open fire with my 20/76 gauge shotgun. It fell straight down out of the tree, dead in the air. Shooting black grouse out of trees is not uncommon with rifles, from longer distances, but shooting one in a tree at shotgun distance is as they are usually impossible to get so close to while up in trees. In fact, I can't recall anyone I know having done so. I dedicated this bird to Tiko, who couldn't be with me to enjoy it.

The black grouse was sitting in the treetop in the opening. The tree I was behind when I shot was the one directly to it's left.

A decent male will be around 4 to 5 kg, but they do get up to 6kg. A female will be around 2.5kg.

Had John been here not long ago, he could have shot the one that came to the house almost every day to lick on a salt stone behind the garage. Didn't even have to rope it in to keep it around.

Erik; Thanks very much for the picture of the black grouse and of course the account of how you got it!

So strange in a way, as that whole event could have occured right here.

Including the rope-able moose!

I walked up on this fellow not long ago. They are well-distributed, and on my summer scouting trips I see more of them than elk, but they are still highly restricted for hunting. Numbers down in thick wolf country, and one of the reasons we are so frantic about getting wolf populations under control.

Erik; your larger decent male capercaillie is about the same size as an average hen turkey here. Gobblers go twice that weight and sometimes more. The hen my son shot the other day went about 10 pounds/4.5 kg's, right about what you say for your male caper.

John,

Erik says things have been hectic lately. That means too many raiding parties. For the Vikings all that rape & pillage, loot & plunder gets old after a while.

Tomorrow I'm off to the Vintagers. I'll probably be a victim of rape & pillage, loot & plunder. Pray for me.

Very best to you and Erik and Peter,
Curl

P.S. Maybe one more raiding party while you are there??? A few Scottish virgins?

Uffda is right...

On a tastier note, Erik, here is a blue grouse I shot yesterday. Larger than our common ruffed grouse we normally shoot, this one was shot at much higher elevation than where I live here, it being among the subalpine firs.

About the same size it looks like to your black grouse!
