      #138739 - 09/07/09 11:03 PM

Hello, what is the difference between a Valmet 412 and a 512?

Thanks, I since read Marrochi I believe for the 512.

I just bought a Valmet 412 in 12 ga/.308 + 12 ga/12 ga barrels and a scope mount. The grouse are back in numbers so the combi will come in handy.

Hey Daryl, I'll make sure to turn the scope down to 2.5 before touching off the shotgun bbl...

Any major modifications between the Valmet 512 and what is now sold as the Marrochi 'Finnclassic' 512? How interchangeable are the parts?

Three different stages of the Valmet/Tikka/Finnclassic:

Valmet 412 made in Finland
Tikka 512 made I presume in Finland (?)
Finnclassic, made in Italy by Marocchi. Now part of the Beretta Group of Companies. The model currently available.

The barrels, mounts etc should all be more or less interchangeable between the three, however some gunsmithing may be required.

Thanks NITRO:

I printed off all the stuff you had for the Valmet system. Very helpful. Yes, thanks again!

The gun I am getting is said to be right {headspace, fitting} with 12/12 barrels and 12/.308. Sellers says assembly/serial numbers don't match. Is this last an issue at all, or are all spare mates different numbers?

I have not seen the gun in-hand yet but have a threeday inspection so I can send it back if it doesn't square.

Go back to find Pages 6 and 7 of the Instruction manual. Was never uploaded so went back to find them.

I have a Tikka 512 SD with fitted barrels in U/O 12 gauge and DR 9.3x74R. I have three sets of barrels which I believe are all Tikkas (.30-06 DR, 12g/.223,12g/7x65R). These three barrel sets still need to be fitted.

As said I believe all three - Valmet, Tikka and Finnclassic barrel sets will all function after fitting. If yours have already been fitted there shouldn't be a problem.

Good fun, relatively inexpensive priced shotgun, combination, double rifle. Mine is very accurate in 9.3mm and the shotgun points well for me too.

Jeff's Outfitters Jeffs Outfitters still list barrels in 12g/7x65R.

If so, they'll read Tikka.

Yes.
I seem to recollect that barrels between the Valmet 412 and 412S series are interchangeable w/o fitting. This was one of the finesses when introducing the improved S series. Not 100% sure on this, though!

Nope: The Tikkas were made in Italy.
The Valmet name was dropped following moving the production to Italy.
Incidentally, my friend's father was head of Valmet's shotgun division when the move took place.

that is my understanding.

My 412S has easily taken the Tikka barrels in several calibers.

I was a Valmet distributor until the move to Italy, when i refused to carry them any longer. AND, i NEVER saw bbls., "S" or otherwise, that didn't need fitting. As a distrubitor, i was NEVER informed by the factory or Valmet USA that the "S" bbls didn't need fitting.

I did all the fitting in my shop, and every bbl. i sold DID need at least some fitting to a new action, EVEN though it may have went on the new action "appearing" to not need fitting...

BTW, i still have numerous NEW bbls in my collection, and every one of them will need some fitting before going on one of my actions...

There is a big difference between VALMET 412 and 512 tolerances.

All 412s were, more or less, handfitted in factory but when the production moved to Italy,
they have chance tolerances in blueprints because 512 etc. has normany machined tolerances.

At the time, i was heavy into "wildcatting", and coming up with some bigger cartridges for the 412's. I was convinced, that once the move was made, that the quality of the steel would go down. The "made in Finland" 412's, have some of the toughest steel ever put into a firearm, as least that's what my rebore man kept telling me.

I do believe, time has proven me right, as the hunters in other countries who have used both "heavily", tell me the 412's were the better guns. Reboreing a 512, tells the same thing.
