Last evening...

While stalking Roebuck, I crossed the path of a vixen on her way back from shopping. She died so suddenly that she had no time to release what she was bringing back to the hole : 2 field mice and 1 slow worm !

5 shots are a group.

Wow! That's quite a catch she was bringing back to the den. She must've killed one, dropped it while she killed another, and yet again, then gone back to pick them all up. I bet she'd make a good retriever for me in the duck blind!!

Good shooting, too!

Andre, what caliber rifle?

Nice shooting, too. Good to see one less predator!

When I was a kid my father and I used to walk around the paddocks with a spotlight, looking for these varmints near our lambing ewes. One night we found a fox that had taken one of twins. It stood near the mother and the other lamb, eating its kill. Every now and again the other lamb would come close and the fox would make a half-hearted lunge at it.

Dad sent me around the light beam to shoot it with our farmer's gun - a bolt-action Mossberg. On the still, frosty air, I could hear crunching on the bones long before I got up there. At maybe 15 yards I stopped and squeezed off with a rifled slug I'd loaded without telling Dad. Hit in the spine, that fox was blown over more emphatically than anything I'd seen then or have since.

But Dad was not pleased. 'What if he'd run? You might have missed!' Yeah, I thought, but we didn't need the dog to find this one.

So what is the point in context of this thread? Well, that fox still had dinner in its mouth, too.

What a great photo, the food-chain in living color. The only thing missing is a nut in the mouses mouth!

Weidmannsheil Andre ! Here in Germany it is illegal right now to shoot adult foxes, because they are still caring for their youngsters. We may shoot the young ones of course but adult foxes are not open before late July or so. But I think in the wilderness no predator cares about these kind of rules too much !
