Interesting.

The .470 SxS has Beesley locks!

Dunno the pattern of the O/U locks. Placement of the pins isn't quite like a H&H lock.

I don't care for the trigger guard of the O/U with both sides rolled.

Nigel,

Did Lancaster have a proprietary lock? If so, I am not aware of it.

I could easily be mistaken. Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.

Not sure it is proprietary but
"Charles Lancaster's, “wrist- breakers” "

As to the second part, I think you are "mistaken"

Oh yeah, the wrist breaker! I forgot about that. Surely nobody would emulate that lock today after far better designs.

Yes, I'm mistaken.

I have a double gun journal with an article on the wristbreaker ( Autumn 1998). They show several pics and end up with a drawing of a Beesley patent similar to the Purdey, but a little more simple. It doesn't have the pushrods and lifter cams at the action knuckle, but has a pivoting cam that compresses the V spring as the action closes. The author indicates it would ease the difficulty in closing over the Model A ( wristbreaker).

Glad the new Lancasters have Beesley actions. Just wouldn't be a Lancaster otherwise.

Comparing the pin placement of the new Lancaster to a 1931 Purdey:

There's one extra pin on the Lancaster, otherwise it looks pretty much the same to me. Might be a clone and not the simplified design referred to.

Wonder what the extra pin is for?

Dunno without looking inside!

Love these doubles.

P.S. In my opinion, which doesn't amount to much, I think they could do a heck of a lot better job of shaping the action bolster.

And also, if this rifle is "ready for the engraver" then the engraver had better be an accomplished actioner. It will require a good bit more filing and polishing before going to the engraver. I'm sure they know that and will certainly attend to it.

A pic explains a thousand words.
Self explanatory what the missing pin does.
Compare it to one of the very early Purdey's.

PS: I'm not affiliated with Lancasters...

OK I see the lever running on the outside of the bridle. Is this an additional interceptor for the mainspring itself?

Please explain the design.

Most interesting.

No it's for keeping the ejector rod pushed out.
You fire the gun lever goes down and touches the ejector rod with the square bit in the action which moves backwards and forwards and comes out the front of the action into the knuckle of the forend.
Open the gun, ejects, close the gun and the lock gets cocked again moving the lever up again.
Now you can open the gun without the ejectors ejecting.

Compare it to a Purdey lock where the round pertruding bit of the hammer of the lock, goes in the ejector rod( the bit where it says no2 in the picture)as the position fired/non fired alters it keeps the rod back or pushes it forward.

How briliantly simple!! Since the arm is a slave to the sear, it won't move out of the way until the sear it set. Should make it easy to time the ejectors.

What a great design.
