Cheap but Lovely American Wine Recommendation
      #135180 - 12/05/09 03:03 PM

The lady in my life drinks only wine, gin and the occasional Margarita and she found some wines made right here in Illinois. I tried every offering that the company offers - they blend wines from different grapes, and, as a result, are not for the purist. But if you enjoy drinking a good wine with food, I recommend them very highly.

Do try them if you'd like to, and let me know what you think.

Cheers!

Thanks for the recommendation! Having been born and raised on a farm in the heartland of Illinois, I owe it to myself to give it a try. I've never heard of them, so thanks for passing this along.

Their boutique winery looks like it is serious, traditional on the outside (Mid West) but modern on the inside.

The wine range looks to be on a lighter sweeter style, which probably appeals to the US market.

Would be interesting to know the weather/seasonal variations in Illinois. The winters I imagine are very cold, what are the springs, summer and autumns like?

Just interested. Vineyards and grapes like dryer months in Summer and Autumn with warm sunny weather for good ripening without increased disease risk from too much moisture, enough but not too much. Farmers are always hard to please.

Jerry,

Do post what you think about them after you try them. I think they are lovely table wines for everyday drinking, not the highly sophisticated top quality French or Australian wines.

Cheers!

John,

SOuthern Illinois is hot as cold as the Chicagoland area becomes. Temperatures, ob average, are about 10F higher for any time of the year, possibly warmer. And they also don;t get the Lake Effect that we do since we are near Lake Michigan. Summers can be really hot here and Autumn / Fall is also warm right upto the end of October. I guess that since these people use native American grapes, their grapes have somehow adapted to the weather here . . .

Yes, these are not the sophisticated wines that are made in Australia, France or to an extent even in California, but I liked them as nice, budget table wines. I am now one of their loyal customers!

Cheers!

Growing up in an Italian neighborhood and household in Western PA, I was introduced into fine home made Italian wines quite young. The closest wine that resembled the local homemade wine was Cribari Table wine. It has been unavailable for years, or at least here in South Florida. I finally found a wine that equals the wine that I remember. It is a cheap table wine called Opici Homemade. It is great to find a wine that tastes good that is inexpensive and readily available. In your case, having it made local is even better!
