Hammer double rifle....
      #132699 - 18/04/09 05:31 PM

Hi all

Looking at the old hammer guns, double rifle´s, shotgun´s and drilling´s. Some of them, are just superb looking gun´s, so nice, well made, got good balance and so. Will be a joy to take them out on the shooting range or even better, out hunting once more.

But, how did the hunter´s back then operated them? Say a hunter was stalking a Buff, and got to the shot, did he cock one or two hammer´s?
What I mean is, when the two hammer´s are cock, are the gun still safe? Or CAN the second hammer fall and fire the next round, as a result of the recoil?

Better to cock one hammer, fire and make the next one ready?

We know from written accounts the big bore hammer rifles doubled from time to time. That would indicate that both barrels were at full cock. Probably had proponents for each method.

Thank you for the reply.

So, if one use a hammer double, rifle, shotgun or even a drilling, it is best to cock only one hammer at the time.

So, one have full control over the second shot.

No, I'd cock both hammers.

Same as I load both chambers of my DR's.

Hi 500Nitro

Ok, well it do make sense to. Thinking about it, if going after a big Buff in Africa or Australia...lion and so.

But also if hunting deer, a quick second shot, if not needed, but still there for me.

You hunt with a hammer double?

Thanks for the reply

I shoot with a mates Hammer Shotgun after Geese
so just pull back both hammers.

I would do the same with a Double Rifle.

You never know when you will need a quick 2nd shot.

If it's happens to double itself, well, that's just
the same as a hammerless Double Rifle doing the same
so I would get it looked at by a gunsmith to make sure it didn't do it again.

Anyway, just my HO, others may have a different opinion.

It certainly can happen on a Hammerless DR.

I've had it occur on a 500/465 a number of times
and a 500 Nitro.

Many are fit with stalking safeties on each hammer.
Personally, I agree with cocking both hammers - there is really no reason that a hammer gun would be more likely to double discharge than a hammerless.
Plus, in the case of a misfire, you can quickly recock the hammer and give another go! Probably not very likely either though.

Yes, if, if a miss fire happen, you can re-cock and try one more time.

A stalking safety, mmmmm, a small "lever" in front of the hammer?

Thanks for the reply

It's an Alex Henry 450-400 2 3/8" BPE. In Alaska I will be hunting moose, your elk, black and brown bear. I've just had the stock repaired it was broken when I bought it. I've got another in .500 3" by Mortimer that needs some TLC. It's on Gunbroker if your interested.

That is what I was talking about - I call them stalking safeties - very different from a stalking safety on a hammerless gun.
Actually, I would think the purpose of a stalking safety would be the ability to take the gun off safe with minimum noise. Certainly true with the small hammer safety mounted either fore or aft of the hammer, but not so with a hammerless. Simply because you move the little lever over and then still have to "click" the safety forward - certainly no quieter than a standard safety.

I personally don't know what purpose the little safety blocking lever serves on a hammerless, but they are cool looking. Maybe if you have a tendancy to accidently slide your gun off-safe.

Do the safeties on hammerguns block the hammer at full cock only? This makes sense to me, because the half-cock position is in itself a safety of sorts. If your gun had a worn sear, it would be nice to use the safeties at half-cock too though.

It's supposed to be regulated for a 230 grain bullet with 80 grains of blackpowder. I'm shooting it today with different loads to see what regulates. On mine the safties go on with the hammers at rest. Keeping them at rest. My guess is to stop the hammers being pulled partially back by brush or whatever and let go. I just sold a McNaughton 450 3 1/4" that the safeties worked at half cock.

Hi

Yes, the stalking safety was also made on some hammerless doubles. And I think it was to make sure the safety did not flip over, when stalking in tick heavy bush in Africa/Asia.

Thanks for the reply

Yes, the 465, instead of my usual give the gun to a gunsmith, get it checked out and worked on to make sure 100% (which is what I do with any gun I buy), took it to the range, all OK except my mate Doubled it. Thought he may have just knocked the trigger. Well it should have gone to the 'smith as it just needed a bit of work on the sears.

The 500Nitro was me on the one time I hit the rear trigger accidently !!!

Got it..I did the same on a 10ga shotgun, hit the rear trigger and got a 2én shot a bit faster than I was thinking of.

Well, as you say, it is a good thing to get all guns, and for sure ALL double, drillings and so checked out, before taking them to the range or hunting.

Thank you for the reply and information

I have, and have had several hammer double rifles, and when walking into a sittuation where both barrels may be needed, I cock both barrels, and I don't use stalking safeties at those times. If the rifle doubles, then either the shooter hit the second trigger because his finger slipped off the front trigger form the recoil of the first shot,or the rifle needs to be repaired. The Exposed Hammer double is no more prone to doubleing than a hammerless double rifle, both are cocked, and when the safety is set to fire position, they are both ready to fire either barrel.

Hi and thank you for the reply.

Yeah,as you say. When the safety is of, they are ready to fire, hammer or hammerless.

So, I guess it is just as "safe" to go hunting with a hammer double/drilling as a hammerless, as long as they are in good condition.
And that goes for ALL guns.

Can I ask what double hammer guns you hunt with? BP or also Nitro?

The difference between the hammer rifle, and the so-called hammerless rifle is the hammerless has a safety the safes both barrels with one button. The exposed hammer gun has two safeties one for each hammer, or no safety at all.

When the safety on the hammerless is set to fire it is in the same condition as the exposed hammer gun that is cocked, and the stalking safeties, if fitted with them, are set to fire both barrels then they are simply dependant on the quality of the sear engaguement. If that is good, one is as safe as the other!

What I mean by my not useing stalking safeties on my hammer rifles is, when I set the safety on to fire it would make no difference which type I was useing, both would be ready to fire either, or both barrels!

When I first purchased a Rigby hammer 450 3 1/4 I would load one barrel and cock both to see if it would double. Never did and always loaded and cocked both thereafter.
