Hopefully people will understand that even with a few trophy crocs taken out and some trapping and culling that to swim in a river like the Daly River you would need to have a brain the size of a peanut.

I think they will still have to overcome CITES for export
and that might take a bit more work.

What Cites list if any are crocodiles on ?

Anyone know ?

We could probably do with more than 25-35 crocs a year out of our systems but small steps to open it up are great!!!!

What is enough gun for a croc???

In the water a head shot with a low powered 25-20 or 32-20 near the eye and ear canal is generally fatal because of the reflected hydrolic shock
On land anything from a 270 up with a well placed shot is usually sufficiant..

A 200gr out of my 30 last summer blew pink mist about 4 feet on the opposite side of the croc...definitely an efficient caliber on crocs...

I can well believe it.

Alan is also right though, anything 270 and up is fine.

CITES permits are what is required for "permission" from the Commonwealth Gov't. Without the C/W allowing CITES permits, the trophies can't be exported.

I believe there is no impediment to the States or Territories allowing croc safaris right now, except the trophies can't be exported.

Let Aussies have a go at it for a year first, to test the waters ....

The thing is with Cites permit's, it's not just as easy as the C/W Gov't saying XYZ and issuing one.

It will be interesting to see what happens in regards to this.

They already issue them, the only thing needed to for them to issue them for safari hunters trophies, rather than from croc farms, or croc "wild harvested/culled crocs" like they are now.

The only thing needed to change is the C/W Gov'ts willingness to act.

600 CITES tags are issued for problem crocs that kill live stock etc every year the lobby is looking to take 25 from this quota. Safari hunting of the porosus crocodile in Australia has been blocked twice at the federal level already, largley because of the relationship that Steve Irwin had with the Howard Government, hopefully things will be different this time but with Peter Garret having the last say on this issue I dont think it will get up. It is a shame as the crocs will be destroyed anyway and we will miss out on a ton of revenue that could be raised if they allowed us to hunt them.
The Porosus croc is an CITES Apendix II listed animal and cannot be exported from Australia or into another CITES compliant country without cites tags. They are also a protected species ander Australian Law so shooting them is not allowed without a Parks and Wildlife permit.
I think the minimum caliber they are considering is .375 after the client takes a shooting test for accuracy and the animals will have to be shot on dry land(mud bank etc) with the guide ready to take a back shot with the gun shouldered when the client fires.

They can be exported at the moment with a CITES tag... just not as a sport hunted trophy.

Minimum calibre under the NT proposal is .30
