Dagga boys anyone
      #131212 - 02/04/09 05:23 PM

Ok since there is some posts on buffalo here goes.

I just came back from scouting one of our concessions for buffalo and look what we found.

No 1 & 2

No 3a

No 3b

No 4a

No 4b

No 5a

No 5b

No 6

No 7

These buffalo are not pen raised and the concessions borders the Kruger National park the buff come and goes as they want from the park but as you buff experts know dagga boys like to settle down in certain areas they enjoy. Altough fenced its truely real big piece of land and bordering the park it is the closest you can come to true wilderness hunting in SA.

Photos added to the "Cape Buffalo Thread".

Superb, thanks for posting.

AFAIAK, as long as they are wild, that's what counts
and the fact that it is not a close in fence.

So which ones would make a nice bull trophy and why, or why not?

At the risk of looking foolish ...

No 1 looks quite good.

No 2 don't know from the angle.

I like no 4, he is a bit like mine, but the curls are not very deep(?). Is no 3 and no 4 the same buffalo? I think they are. Photo numbers 3a and 3b make him look a better trophy(?)

No 5 is the same buffalo as no 1.

No 6 is broomed off on the right horn.

***

OK ladies and gentlemen,

What are your thoughts?

What sort of sizes would these be?

Thanx Peter yes very glad to be abck in proper weather again.

3 and 4 is the same buffalo

As for size come and shoot them then we will measure them.

Anyway my favorite is no.3 but no.6 six with broomed off horn is a close second.

Size in buffalo does not count to me at all as long as they have very good character and obviously hard bosses.

Count me in - tho No2 (buff in the background on 1st pic) triggers my imagination - huge body, massive neck, worn down tips, and bosses... I'd shoot it on sight

1,2,5 and 6 look like old heavy bossed dagga boy trophies.
3 and 7 I am not sure about - they look great but I wonder if they aren't at prime breeding age?
4 looks young to me (although less so in the 4b photo)
I am probably completely wrong of course, but hey you did ask!

Ok I see that 3 and 4 are the same bull - still, they look younger than 1,2,5 and 6

1+2 are to broomed for my liking
3a+3b has a nice dil but short on length
4a)4b have the best bosses and the rest are broken or broomed but the 4's lack the dip and the tips are higher than the bosses, now 7 needs to show a little more but looks the best but 1/2 is hidden i would wait and see what 7 showsor keep looking

Guys,
Would one of you be willing to mark up a few of the above pics showing proper shot placement? I know there's a book out there with this, but for us neophytes it would be instructive now and then to get to confirm our hunches. I'm an MD and have a pretty good idea of the anatomy in question, but would like to hear from those who know if you don't mind. Great pics BTW
Cheers,
Bill

Peter, I must be dumb as well as I would have let you shoot any-one as well! I know some people do not like the broomed off horns, but I think it looks preety cool on an old buffalo bull

For me especially with buffalo character counts more than horn leght or width. To put it in perspective unless you shoot a top ten animal nobody except yourself will pick up your name in that record book. So why bother go and find the dirtiest, angriest looking buffalo and that would be real to me.
