An interesting little Gibbs

A George Gibbs Farquharson sporting rifle. According to the serial number it was originally built in 1887, original caliber unknown. Currently wearing a 20-3/8" barrel in 250 Savage with the typical Gibbs Bristol markings so it appears to be a factory job. The action and barrel are in great shape; the action has been re-cased but the bluing on the barrel looks original. The wood is new but needs to be redone.

The canted trigger is nice. Exquisite metalwork esp the trigger guard and assembly. IMO Gibbs was IT!

BTW do I see a m3 reproof forward of the Knock's form?

Bestboss - I plan to get it out tomorrow afternoon to see how it shoots.

Kamilaroi - Where do you mean by "forward of the Knock's form"? The proofs I have found so far are the usual Birmingham 1905-1925 marking on the barrel, frame (you can sort of see this one, it's up on the receiver ring in between the engraving pattern) and breech block. There is also the prior proofing on the breech block, I would think there would be one on the frame as well.

Daryl_S - Whoever did the case colors did a good job, they kept it very british looking. Even though there is some wear in the colors on some of the edges I think it has been done much more recently than the barrel change (I estimate that to be 1915-1925).

No, seriously. I'm not sure where you were referring to, the term you used isn't one I'm familiar with.

I found the original receiver proof. It's on the opposite side of the ring from the newer one.

Most likely unless they had more than one, I found it at Patrick's booth at the Vegas show.

I've been going back to look at Gibbs Farq's and noticed your Gibbs doesn't look to have any safety.
Could this rifle have originally had one fixed to the trigger assembly?

BTW, is it "knox", "knocks", "nocks"...
Are we talking about a definite prominance atop the barrel just in front of the action or simply a heavier breech-end section of barrel such as this rifle looks to have?
Not many Gibbs had a knox form in the sense that Westleys often do.

I thought I was being "cute" by not showing the left side of the gun, I thought it would be interesting to see how long it took someone to notice there was no safety.

It does have one, it's a sliding safety on the left side of the trigger housing. Seems to be a rare configuration.

It slides lengthwise. My guess was it was a special order by someone who was left handed; the positioning is not very convenient if you are right handed.

There is a neat Gibbs Farquharson .256 in Bass Pro at Springfield, Mo right now that has what's left of a diopter mounted in the nose of the comb. It has a knob on the side of the stock marked 1,2, and 3 in tiny gold numbers. Unfortunately that's all that's left, and the rest of the necessary cutout in the stock has been filled.

Tom Rowe has the only one known to exist with the staff intact so I know where to go for pictures and measurements.
