Merkel double rifle action used, is it same size as their 12

Anyone know if the Merkel double rifle action they use (I think it is used by modern day Rigby's too), is the same size, width and length, as thier 12 gauge action they have on their shotguns?

Have always been told that they are used to for the 20 gauge shotguns--

Not that they were built specifically for the 20 but rather for the 470 and then also used on the shotguns...have never verified that but members here have told me this ...I checked into this once as I had one at the time...

I think Ripp is essentially correct. The action balls aren't as big as a 20 ga. though. They don't need to be.

The action used for the 577 has to be a 12ga frame. The 20 would be too small.

The 20ga size is used for those calibers from 375-500.

As I own a number of Merkels, with plans to buy another, I took this issue up with Merkel some time back and they confirmed that it is a double rifle action and is also used for their 20 gauge shotguns. A good friend of mine is the Merkel accredited gunsmith, here in Oz, and he agrees that they are rifle actions but of a size suitable for 20 guage shotguns.

All Merkel double gun actions are made, and tempered with double rifles in mind! The Merkel shotguns are just VERY STRONG shotguns in actions that are needlessly strong for shotgun use!

IOW, Merkel double barreled shotguns are built on double rifle actions, not the other way round!

This is what I was told. Why build the tooling to make 2 differant actons. Just use the strong rifle acton on the shotguns and they won't shoot loose. When was the last time you heard of a Merkel shotgun shooting loose?

tried to post pics of a 12 gauge merkel action i have but it takes me to long to type messages
basic queastion can the 12g action be used to build a 375h&h although it looks like a weaker construction than there 20 gauge
