I have been looking at this gun for a while and have talked to the seller a couple times and have decided to turn it loose on the NE forum members.
Selling as a H&H, and he said seller thought it may have been a Jeffery but couldn't recall, but methinks it has to be a Fraser.
I asked Cherry's to remove the scope bases to see exactly what is engraved on the rear bridge and he said he was worried that he would bugger the gun since the screw was very tight. He also said that with the screw removed from the ring, the barrel will not unscrew by hand so I am not sure if the rebarrel job was done correctly or not.
The price is very good IMO, even if not original it would be a very classic rifle to carry around.
I just have my sights on a bigger fish right now and thought it might find a welcoming home here.

Don't forget it could have been made by Fraser and then retailed by Holland.
Anyway, it looks Fraserish but I have a Thomas Bland made the same way in 404.
Re the Screw, if you use the correct turn screw, it shouldn't be a problem getting it undone. try some oil / loosener on it.
One thing, if you can find out what "year" it was supposed to have been made, we can then cross check the serial number against the makers and see if it happens to fall in the correct period.
That's just my HO.

All very well, as long as the front scope-base screws were not fitted with the barrel in place!

i hate american gunsmiths that dont admit to their own limitations.
this is a frazer take down rifle, you can see it in the celtic border that he were the only one to do on his guns.
this was a very rare and expensive gun untill some asshole fired up his dremel and let it whirl away.
now it is a showcase of what not to do, the bases alone is enough to get a hanging party going, the rebarrel job is a disgrace, and the overall workmanship is something that proberly were taught in home education along with finger painting and handprints in clay.
it can for most parts be brought back, but it will proberly cost more than the asking price he wants.
the fun part is that it is worth more as a frazer gun than a holland & holland.

Appears to have been at one time a very nice Fraser that has been messed with, hence the bargain price. The buttpad, peep sight, re-barrel, and scope mounts make it a difficult restoration.

Steady on Peter.
This rifle probably was a hand-me down some years ago when it was worth about $1000. Who knows, the owner may have live out west and had limited access to a knowledgeable gunsmith and really needed a scope. If he was able to take game, then the means justify the end.

it just tears my heart out, because this butcher job could have been done on a winchester or a remington and it wouldent matter the slightest, but to do this to a frazer is unholy.

Well, glad I could get your day off to a good start Peter!
I have spoken to bouldersmith at length on this gun, and he feels it could be done properly without huge issues. Fill in the holes, recut engraving etc. Also, the peep is a period piece I think, so not out of place on this gun. The barrel contour looks OK and the wood is actually really good IMO.
Marrakai's comment on the front ring screw has to be correct - the vendor said it felt like it was binding on something when he attempted to remove the barrel!
I can't bitch about Cherry's too much - I did pick up my Lee Speed from them and am totally happy with that. Anyway, the Fraser is priced right for what it is IMO.
Cool that it is on a small-ring mauser too.
There must be somebody here whom can return it to it's former glory...

Its a D&J Fraser made originally about 1892 according to that serial number. It could be saved, and my feeling is its a bargain even the way it sits. I suggest you buy it fast, or I will.

many of these were built on 96 mausers ,the peep is not as bothersome as the scope mount i have a gibbs with the same peep probably done around when the gun was built , the scope mount looks real late on this fraser ,i,m sure the holes can be cleaned up as for it being rebarelled not familiar with darlington??however you cut it , these guns are very rare and probably not many left that havent been fooled with... the price seems nice too ...paul
