Jan Oelofse has been around a long, long time. I don't think he PH's anymore, he's older, but he has an excellent reputation. I believe he was a stunt double for John Wayne in Hatari! I own that DVD and love it.

Since this is my first safari, I hope my experience with them is a very good one. I spent many hours and months researching different companies and the information is overwhelming. It comes down to common sense, favorable opinions of others with first hand experience, and very clear goals of what is to be expected from the safari experience. The personal factor also comes into play in one's experience and impressions when dealing and communicating with the company.

I would love to add Cape Buffalo to my hunt, but I'm budgeting $15,000 for the hunt. I'm sure this is a paltry sum compared to what most here spend on their safaris but, for good or bad, that's what I'm budgeting.

I would think for 15k --based on the animals you are after---that would be more than adequate..based on my experiece...but, things change...

Don't sell yourself short--the last I checked...15k was still 15k...and still a substantial sum of money...the really expensive part is trip 2, 3, 4, 5, 6......

Ripp,

It's enough to imagine the first trip coming to fruition, much less subsequent ones! Additional trips will be icing on the cake and I will feel fully accomplished and satiated having experienced at least one safari on the Dark Continent. Not going would be the one thing I would look back on in later years with some regret.

Thank you! The irony is that the Cape Buffalo is the very animal that set it's hook into me many years ago and is the very animal that has finally drawn me to this point and, as it may turn out, is the very animal that will elude the plans of the hunter who seeks him. I will be absolutely overwhelmed by a plains game hunt in Namibia if things continue as planned.

Doesn't that just reek of Moby Dick???!!! Or maybe The White Buffalo with Charles Bronson

Dont let it worry you. Once you've been on one African hunt, you'll always want another one, so you can make Buff your priority on the next hunt.

Agree..

...I watch it all the time...but as of late---don't see it aired --not sure if its gone for a bit or forever--used to record it at 5:30 Sunday morning's on ESPN 2...

As to your trip to Africa for plains game...you WILL love it...BUT,,,,you will long to go back...you are following exactely what happened to me...and I always thought if I could just go once,,that would be enough...and if, due to unforseen circumstances, I would never have returned..we at least I had done it once..but, have now been on 4 and currently planning for #5..

With the state of the world economy however,,,might hold off a year or so to see how it all shakes out...did get a flyer from one of my booking agent friends who has a PH that averaged 55# elephant in '08 that is offering a bull ele for a very competitive price...will visit with him more...

Ripp, feel free to send me a PM for any recommendations you have regarding safari outfitters, PH's, etc. Again, I'm basing everything I'm doing on my own research and the first hand experiences of others.

Regarding Under Wild Skies, for some reson it hasn't aired over the last 3 weeks and I'm getting sick and tired of watching the same reruns of Getting Wild with Cindy Garrison eating toads in Thailand!!

I took a very nice old Bull in the Caprivi Strip with Outfitter - Vaughan Fulton's Classic Safaris www.fultonclassicsafaris.com . Don't be concerned about it escaping into another country-shoot straight, and make the first shot count. Also, your PH will be there to back you up, should an escape be possible.

Awesome! Thank you! I would love to hear more about the hunt, condidtions, game, etc... When was your last hunt with them?

By the way, where is the Oley Valley in Pennsylvania?

Leaving SLC on August 14 and will be in Namibia by the 16th to begin a 16 day hunt in the Caprivi for buffalo and elephant. Looking forward to being in my dreams awake. Hopefully there will be a lion available when I hunt. Would be something to get three of the big five in 16 days. Some of the best minds are working on our economy so hopefully Tanzania in another year or two hunting buffalo on the mountains with Rainer josch. Maybe a chance at leopard, also.

Isn't the percentage the outfitters usually quote, the percentage of the quota they fill? ie an outfitter which says they have a 100% success rate translates as 100% of the quota filled? ie if their quota is 5 lions, they get 5 lions, irrespective of whether they have 5 clients or 15 clients?

Agree that some less trustworthy would do that...however the firm I was with and hunted with..IMHO, would not do that..nor quote that...

However, one of their PH's will be staying with my for a few day in 2 weeks,,Ian Gibson..I will ask him and advise...

Know what you are saying, as I got totally screwed on my first trip to Africa...Now I check, recheck and check again...

As long as most of my money goes for liquor, women, cars, guns, & hunting, that's money well spent. The only money I'll consider wasted is whatever stuff is left for Obama & the rest of the Chicago mob to seize from my newly nationalized bank accounts.

We both might wind up living under the same bridge, but I'll be the guy who hunted elephants in 2009.

you know, im coming back, and you have better line them pigs up again, so i can have another go at them.
and yes it is very addictive, i think that the wildebeest and kudu and gemsbuck would be the target for our outings this time, and a caracal for the fun of it.

Well, not exactly my safari plans, but funny things happen around the campfire. My father went to S Africa with me for my safari in August 08… After a hard day of hunting my father and the owner of the outfit star chatting it up about how my father was a construction worker in a past life… long story short, My father is going to work for him for the month of March as a handy man, in exchange for room and board. I joke about how going there to work and not hunt and it is like going to the bar without ordering a drink. Needless to say I’d love to be in his shoes. Just goes to show you that even in a bad economy a month in Africa can be done.
