building on a Brno 21H?
      #124637 - 20/01/09 08:26 PM

Hi!
I have not written a lot on your forums, but I've done quite a bit of reading.:p

So here's what I want to know: (I might not be in the right section, but hopefully someone will help me out )
I have a Brno 21H with a pitted barrel (8x57IS) and a lousy stock.
I've been thinking about buliding a 10,75x68 on this action, perhaps in combination with a barrel in 6,5x55 for practice and smaller game.
Will this conversion take a lot of machining, for instance in order to get it to feed properly?
I don't think so, but i'm not sure as i'm a novise at these things
(No, I'm not doing it my self, and i haven't talked to my smith about it yet.)

I am also going to get a new stock for the rifle.

All replies are good ones

Build a 6,5X55, 6,5X57, 7X57 on your petit Brno 21H action and get a large ring action for the 10,75X68 or 404 Jeffery - ZG47 is a nice action to use

Velkommen, 3006 og hilsen fra nord Idaho.

I like Johan's idea.

I do not have experience with the 21 action.

But I had alot of problems with feeding of the 6.5x55 in my CZ550 and I am thinking that a switchbarrel job going between the two calibers you mention would not work well for one of them.

I posted the whole ordeal elsewhere. Eventually, my 6.5 was rebarreled to 9.3x62 and I am VERY happy with it. Feeds perfectly, slick as chocolate chip cookies through a Beagle.

Johan is correct -- the 10x68 would be pushing the limits of size in that action - which is really a small ring mauser type action.

I have seen wonderful custom rifles based on the BRNO "21" in 30-06 and using the original stock, which for such a light rifle must bite a little bit. BRNO 21 traditionally have long throats that allow a 8mm bullet to be seated quite far out and one can get very nice velocities out of them. I find that when loaded heavy they tend to kick a little - but they are wonderful "carry for a long time to shoot once" rifles.

I have found that the BRNO ZG-47 magazines a a few millimters longer then the 21 or Mauser 98's and the ZG-47 (a large ring) were used by BRNO in the 10.75x68. ZG-47 make a better platform for larger rounds for those two reasons.

and by the way -- if you are selling that old stock - give me a pm here in Canada please

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I'm aware that many think that building a big bore on a smallring 98 is pushing the limit, but I also know that it's been delivered that way from factory (not Brno, but original M98 smallring sporters.)
about the stock, i'm afraid its in a rather poor condition. It's been broken and repaired, and somone put a file or sander to it and removed all the checkering.
I have not yet desided on what to do, but i do have a 10,75x68 barrel on hand for a good price, and, that's what got me thinking.
