Get on the plane.

Let us know once you've shot it -- my guess is roundball at ~1300fps

cheers

peter,
What is the rifling twist of your gun?
I have some interesting slugs for rifled shotguns (and appropriate rifled choke tubes) to try.

Hmmm... interesting, proofed for shot, so some kind of a combo ball and shotgun? Thirteen over one is not a standard for paradox ammo of the day. It will be interesting to see what kind oe rifling system the gun uses.

Peter,

Congratulations on a great gun and a great find! I look forward to subsequent posts regarding your progress with her. Admittedly, I must become a better student of proof marks. I've never been much of a collector of vintage guns and have mostly purchased new, but this forum really gets me thinking that learning the proof marks may be a good investment of time and money!

thanks jerry

well the pictures show alot more rust than is visible on this one but what the heck, the treatment this one will get is a good rust blue on the barrels and oil finish on the stock, im undecided about the action we will see. oh and the pad will be the first thing to go a new silvers is on order as we speak....

cheers

That looks to be pretty heavy pitting in the chambers, Peter. Can that be reamed slightly to reduce the chance of the case wall expanding into them and sticking?

I have two I. hollis sxs 12 ga. Both smooth bores for shot. One is a BP hammer gun and the other a BL non-ejector Nitro proof. The later from 1924. Both are very nice shooting guns. I would love to add a gauge Bore rifle or paradox to the mix. Congrats for yours Peter.

That's good news Peter. It would be a shame to be as deep as they look, with such nice 'externals'.

Peter....

What sort of rifle is it at 7lbs? There is a H&H much the same going on gunsinternational, and its also 7lbs odd......

I thought the 12 bore rifles started at about 11lbs......

Thanks

Ben

its fully rifled, so i guess that i will start around 3,5-4 drams of black powder and a round ball and work up from there.

Peter - good idea Peter - blck powder, although producing more recoil with any given 'drams' equivelant load, will also produce less pressure. I failed to note what bullet weight the gun was nitro-proofed for - isn't than normal to have? 1 1/8OZ is only a 14 bore ball weight at 492gr. - abotu .690"

To get to the bottom of the grooves, might demand a patched ball (not a bad idea) as discussed in a different thread. A .715" RB would work, as would a .725" ball, but both would be 1 1/4oz or heavier. My .725" Tanner mould cases .723" in WW metal and they weigh in the 550gr.range, similar to a pure lead .715" ball. To go to a .735" ball will increase the weight to 600gr. A ball at groove diameter would be .740" (620 in WW) or slightly heavier.

That this rifle is Nitro Proofed for 1 1/8oz shot means modern nitro shotshells which produce 11,500LUP/PSI? to 12,000 LUP/PSI? Anyway, by this, you could easily load it with enough black powder and a 550gr. round ball to get 1,600fps easily - probably 6 1/4 drams for this rifle. BTW - that load will kick a bit, but it certainly allows a wide range of loads for you to find what it regulates with. Starting with 3 to 3 1/2 drams is a good idea.

Developing loads for that gun is going to be fun!

daryl

the 1 1/8 load is from the reproff, i pay that no mind, sadly this gun dont show any load on the watertabel so i just have to reinvent the wheel with this one
the rifling is about 1:55-60" so would that be both short conical and RB ?

i really look forward to getting this one to play, and yes i think a 6,5 dram would smart a tad, but im game for it, just for fun, also still thinking about baker " a hardened 12 gauge round ball in front of 6 drams of black powder will completly penetrate a bull elefants head"

best

peter

Re: I. HOLLIS & SONS 12 bore [Re: peter]

My .69 (14 bore) smokepole made diagrams of 1 1/2" constantly at 100 meters with from 140gr. to 165gr. of 2f and a patched round ball. It's twist was 66". It would not shoot accurately at 100 meters with less than 140gr. of powder. Dropping the charge to 3 drams of 3F would open groups to almost 4" at 100 meters and fall some 5" below the line of sight. 3 drams shot OK to 50 yards, if 2" off the bags is good - not good enough for me, though. 120gr.(4.4drams) to 140 gr.(5.2 drams) for close shooting would cut a barely enlarged hole for 5 shots.

I would be happy with 3" at 100 from your double & I'm sure it wil provide.

Of course, I"d stay away from conicals if at all possible.

At 7 pounds 10, it is probably meant for 1,000fps with a light conical or better yet, due to the rifling a 'moderate" 4 dram load - 110gr. to 115gr.(or more) and round ball might be better yet. The recoil impulse necessary to regulate will be better served with a faster round ball load, than a barely moving, football-arching trajectory of a concial. In my opinion - of course. I am biased towards a round ball in bore guns. Baker's words still ring true - he had conical moulds made for his rifles, and they never gave satisfaction on big animals - he eventually "gave up the conical as useless" for killing game.

He was talking about bore rifles, of course, not the .577 BPE, which was the first conical rifle he used that would compete with his bore rifles. Due to it's high velocity with descent weight projectile, it gave enough penetration and shock. In the larger bore rifles, the conicals developed such low speeds, as to be very much inferior to round balls. Besides, round balls are much easier to cast and load for, especially when a patch can be used to make fitting perfect.

Lyman and Lee both make a .690" and Lyman a .715 as well - perfect for any sized 12 bore - with an appropriate patching. Lyman also makes a .735" ball mould, and Jeff Tanner will make you any size you want in a brass mould, for about 50% the cost of a Lyman mould. I like my Tanner moulds - sprayed with Ms Moly or Hoppe's moly bullet coating. This eliminates any sticking or soldering of hard alloys to the brass - or iron blocks for that matter. I use it on all blocks. It is a one-time application. Rapine also sells a 'mould prep' which is a graphite in a solution. You merely brush it allover the mould and let it dry. With the moly's spray the mould blocks inside and out, and let it dry - which is rapidly, heat it up and start casting perfect balls.

The Tanner moulds don't have a sprue cutter - I use 'sharpened' side cutters or a plyer's type wire stipper to snip off the sprues of those balls, then file the remaining little snip of lead off. This way it doesn't matter which way they go in, unlike balls from a sprue-cutting mould as loaded in my 16/14 bore ammo above. They could also be filed, but the ball is smaller in diameter top to bottom, than side to side due to the type of cuttoff used by both Lyman and Lee.

As a side note - friend Keith's .75 has a 56" to 60" twist I think (Getz ML) barrel and it shoots well with from 100gr. to 200gr. of 2F with a heavily patched .735" WW alloy ball. Until he reduced his charge to below 140gr. 2F, Keith couldn't keep a WW ball inside a moose. Boom - WHAOK - down - or stagger & down. What a gun! Quite similar results with my little 14 bore.

thanks daryl

i allready ordered both a round ball mould of .735" and a paradox mould at the same time, they should be here in 6-8 weeks.

i have to do some metal work on my father in laws car tommorow, but i hope to get some time to see if this gun likes brenneke slugs(i know i know, but that is what i have right now)

hopefully the good looking one(niicky) has some time to go out with me and record it as well.
