14.5 whisper.
      #117069 - 16/10/08 03:47 PM

I was browsing Cartridges of the World and the 14.5 Whisper by JD Jones caught my eye on page 228. The case is a shortened 577 cases to just over 2" and it is claimed to push a 750 grain projectile to 1600fps. It is stated that this is a good cartridge for the Ruger #1. In my humble opinion this would be a good cartridge to push 650 grn woodleighs to 1650-1700 fps. Recent photos of these bullets recovered from N.T. boars from a double 577 2 3/4 really impressed me. I can not afford a double in this calibre and I do not want a 3" version. In a 10 pound rifle, recoil would be about 55 pound. Has anyone had experience with this cartridge.

577 Snider brass and dies are readily availabe here. The Snider case is 2" long and might be suitable in a Ruger #1.

The standard 2 3/4 inch .577 cartridge will push a 650gr Woodleigh to 1650-1700 fps at around 8 tons pressure, and is an ideal chambering for a modern double or Ruger No.1.

I have a little experience with this cartridge, and strongly recommend it. Can't imagine why anyone would want to shorten it to just over 2 inches when length is immaterial in a break-open DR or falling-block.

My thoughts on the .577 x 2 3/4 chambering have long been available on the web: those who aren't sick of hearing it can read my propaganda here.

Curse it, Mr. Marrakai!

Now you have me thinking about finding a .577 barrel. I hope to be building a single shot on a Westley Richards action, and Messrs. Richards and Co. did chamber the '97 in .577. I wonder what bullets are available here in the states?

Marrakai

Thanks for the advice. I did think of the 2 3/4, but I believe dies and a reamer might be a problem. The lower operating pressure of the 2 3/4 would certainly be a benefit. I am very familiar with your experience with this calibre and your articles have been the catalyst in looking at this project. A couple of minor rifles will have to go to fund it. Back to the drawing board.

Will the 577 2 3/4 light work in the Greener GP shotgun Action using nitro for black loads. If so will it still give about 1600 fps to 650 grain bullets safely?

No guarantees, but I think the standard Martini action should be strong enough for the .577 'N-for-B' equivalent. I believe plenty were so-chambered in the late 1800s.

I have never been able to understand the infatuation with the GP Shotgun or Police-gun actions. The standard rifle actions should be much stronger, and are a lot more available (a hell of a lot more of them were made than the GP version). They are similar internal dimensions, but provide a great deal more 'meat' behind the action block than the shotgun variants, which were cut away behind the breech-block hinge-pin, presumably to reduce weight. This is hardly a consideration when rebarrelling to a 12-bore rifle or .577!!

...

Rifle Action on the left, shotgun action on the right.

I reckon the rifle action looks more elegant than the hump-back GP shotgun anyway!

Glenn,

The Woodleigh bullets are available from time to time from Midway and others.

I have found the Montana Precision Swaging in 560 grains to be a fine bullet for paper patching. I would think it would be the cat's meow in a WR '97.

I am using it in my Alex Henry DR featured here.

The .577 2 3/4" BPE is a fabulous round.

Marrakai.

I take it the rifle action you are talking about is the Martini 577-450. Is that correct.
