I like your gun, but I have one idea that I think you need to follow up on. It appears that your gun, when viewed on my computer, at least, seems to have brass screws holding on the gripcap, buttplate, and the trigger guard. New builders, including myself at one time, think that by using brass screws, they remove the chances of these screws rusting. In fact what happens, is that the acid still present in the walnut wood will corrode those brass screws and you may not even know it. When you go to remove them some time in the future, the screw shaft will bind in the wood and the head will break off just below the surface. Bad News! Don't be tempted by brass screws because they match the guns' looks, pull them out and put in steel screws. You'll be glad you did! Keep up the good work! Bob H.

At the very top of the post is a link to the description, click on "HERE". It's a little on the heavy side at 11 pounds 8 ounces, I should have turned the barrels down to a lighter profile. Live and learn I guess, it still handles very well it's just heavy to pack around.

Birdhunter50 is correct about the screws - besides - steel or iron is period corect while brass isn't in the ML era,a s far as I know.

One other thing about styling - I'd not have not put so much drop into the heel. The heel should be almost a straight line, horizontally with the comb. More drop than that ezxcentuates muzzle rise and slows the second shot while not pointing as well, which is why the English design had straight combs back to the heel. Each to his own, just my opinion.

Stainless steel barrels aren't period correct either as far as I know, LOL, and the shape and dimensions of the stock are a perfect fit for me, I have a shotgun and two rifles stocked to those same dimensions, and they are a perfect fit, and handle beautifully in my hands. Of course I doubt any of those guns would work for very many other people. I'm a knuckle dragger, LOL. This one wasn't built to replicated any particular period correct M/Ler. I built this for myself on a budget just because I wanted it. Total cost in materials was less than $300.00 plus my spare time. If I was building for a customer it would have all the period correct furniture, and be stocked accordingly. But since I was building for myself I get to take any liberties I want with it. For instance I used compression springs in the locks, instead of V-springs, and the brass is just a looks thing, I do know that brass with acidize in walnut, but I'm not to worried about it, given the way I finished this stock it's not likely to be a problem.

Why worry about Brass screws when you have a hunk of Stainless as the barrels !


Very well done, should be a good shooter for you.
