500 Black Powder Express Double
      #112697 - 27/08/08 03:26 PM

As some of you know I apprenticed under Steve Zihn (szihn) for a couple of years and have been out on my own for about 5 years now (part time only), but I've decided to take the plunge into full time this year, so for your viewing pleasure I present my most recent build.

It's .510 groove .500 land, 1-24" twist stainless barrels. It weighs 11 pounds 8 ounces. Has a 15 1/4" length of pull. It shoots a 500 grain Wheel Weight Conical, that is sized and rifled through a section of barrel that I cut off to use for a sizing die. It is regulated for 100 yards with a single rear sight. The load is CCI #11 cap, 90gr Pyrodex RS, no wad, cardboard or patch, it's just the bullet seated right over the powder. The stock is claro/black american walnut from Oregon. The checkering is 16LPI flat top. I built every piece from scratch except the barrels and nipples. The letter engraving is mine, the scroll work is Steve's (with many thanks from me for helping out with this build). The lock plates and tang are color cased, the rest is rust blued. All the yellow parts are of course brass. He suggested I not show this one off because it is not for sale it was built for me by me just to have, but I'm very happy with it and thought it would be worth sharing.

That's a three inch bull at 100 yards.
Hope you like it.

C
P.S. just ignore the finger prints I didn't think to wipe it off between photos.

Hi again CowboyCS.
You may remember my PM on another forum.
It would be nice to see some of the pictures you take along the process of building this rifle (I saw them on another forum)
You have made a wonderfull rifle.
I just get the book Recreating the Double Barrel Muzzleloading Shotgun and fins very good information on bulding double guns (both shotguns and rifles).
I will made my double rifle this year.
Thanks for sharing.

There are over 150 pictures of the build, I did a fair job of documenting it along the way.
How about just a link to my PHOTOBUCKET 500 BPE MUZZLELOADER

CowboyCS.

Are breech plugs removables?
How much shooting did you have before getting the rifle regulated?

Thanks
Martin

The breech plugs are removable, they unscrew just like any hooked breach.
It took about 40 shots out of each barrel to establish a common load(I had trouble finding a powder, wad or lack of , and bullet combination that would give me a good group because these were take off barrels) and then I regulate that load.
Most of the load work-up was at 25 yards and a small amount of regulation and the rest was done at 100 yards, once I moved back to 100 yards, I probably only put 10 shots down each side to get the regulation to were I was happy.
