Checked out one of our favourite hunting spots last weekend, with mixed results.

This time we drove a little closer than usual on a dis-used track which put us within a couple of kilometres of the spring-jungles and avoided a long slog (..and back!) through the parched ironstone country. As we left the truck (and the rifles) to check out the last creek crossing, out waddled the biggest boar we have seen in years! He trundled off through the open grassland, showing us a clear 4 inches of thick ivory each side as he looked back at us, all we could do was watch! Damn! We know better, of course, and should never have been caught with our pants down, but one assumes the noise of the approaching vehicle, doors closing, talking etc would have sent any game packing long before we walked over.

After that, we had high hopes but the swamps, springs and waterholes we hunted were still way too wet for this time of year, and no mobs or loner boars were camped in the usual places. Also, the new direction of appraoch was not as favourable due to prevailing wind, and we may have given the quarry our scent on a couple of occasions. Unavoidable sometimes when one is walking creeklines.

Several times during the day I held the bead on big scrub bulls and every member of a mob of feral horses, but elected not to shoot. The best bull's horns were not that great, and he was a big white brahmin cross which just doesn't have the right 'look' in a trophy photo!

With sore feet and clean barrels at the end of the day, we decided to check out one last waterhole, where we found a single wallow and set of tracks. Searching the adjacent gully kicked out a nice boar, and Marty's Anchutz .270 did the damage. Small in body, but long in ivory, a fitting last-ditch salvation for the day!



We'll be giving that country a spell for a couple of months, hoping it will dry out a bit as the hot weather increases. October is hot as hell inland in the Top End, but it always provides great hunting if you can stand it!

Nice boar indeed. I killed my first boar last winter and cant wait to get another. I like to hunt them after deer season is over.

peter: Inland temperatures during late October reach 46 degrees in the shade at midday most days, with a bit of humidity thrown in!

That's 115 degrees for the metrically challenged!

No worries lounging around in the shade slurping on a beer or Bombay Saphire in those temperatures, but carting 5kg of water, a kg or two of cartridges (!), another 5kg of cameras, knives, etc, and a 5kg rifle on a 15 to 20 km walk in the midday sun is bloody good exercise, to say the least!

46 DEGREES!!!!!!

you are a tougher man than me thats for sure, i was in southern france a few weeks ago for a family wedding and it went to 39 degrees in the shade, i would have shot myself but my fingers were to wet so i couldent hold on to the gun.

Very nice. One of my favorite hunts! Great job and a nice honest boar and very nice rippers!
Sounds like the heat is worse than Texas!! That is saying something.

A good-lookin pig, Marrakai, but how does he rate in the Rowland Ward book? What length or weight of tusk is equivalent to a 100-pounder from an elephant?

Thanks guys. Regarding Rowland-Ward, we score by the Douglas system in Australia/NZ which penalises for uneven-ness, although this particular hog's ivory was very even. Unfortunately he was just average length within the jaw, and not especially thick, so failed to break the magic 30 point barrier!

Moggie, we are finding some places wetter than last season for this time of year, and other places drier. Bit hard to pick. I'll let you know by end of October!

Funny.....my next biggest set go 29 3/4 or something points and are significantly bigger than this set. What the difference was, was the symetry of these ones and the length of grind. So obviously using douglas symetry makes a big difference in the overall score. Still, it was a nice pig at the end of a day where we covered a lot of km's for no result. It really was our last chance for the day.

By October I may be able to drive out over most of the flood plains without bogging down to the axels!
