CZ 550 owners
      #106667 - 04/06/08 06:47 PM

Can someone who owns a CZ 550 in .458 Win etc help with a scope mounting question.

I was considering putting a Zeiss Conquest on the rifle when I get it, with Warne or Talley QD rings, but I am told a scope with an objective bell doesn't leave enough usable tube to put the QD rings on and still span the action. I don't have a problem using a Leupold 1.5-5 to get around it but cuirous all the same.

Thanks

Adam

Hi: I have a CZ550 in 416 Rigby with an 2.5x8 leupold in talley mounts no problems. I also have a Brno 602 .458 win mag that has the same length action[ i would like it shorter]with no scope . I saw a shooter at the range with a 602 .458 and he had a little scope on it that had a straight tube and i noticed he had the front ring tightened over the front lense. I didn't think that was a good thing but he said he has no problems with the set up. maybe if your are very easy when you tighten you would be ok. sorry i never asked what the scope was. Regards Dan

I'm confuzzled.

I have a 550 in 6.5x55. I believe that the action is the same one used for the long magnums, but regardless, I had no trouble mounting a scope with a wide objective lense and QD mounts. No troubles were encountered, and I mount my scopes pretty far forward.

Warne QD's were used.

I have a CZ550 in .308. One thing to also consider is the bolt handle clearance of the scope. I use the factory supplied mounts/rings with a Zeiss 6x42 and I have enough clearance for the bolt handle from the scope and the objective lens from the barrel. If I replace the factory rings I will need rings of Medium height.

9.3x57,

Question on your 550--I come across one in the local sport shop--has a full length stock--fits like a dream--has a set trigger---did some investigating on line and see it comes in 9.3x62 as well as 30-06 and 270...

Is yours with the full length stock?? I was thinking of getting one for Africa in the 9.3x62 Caliber..possibly throw a q/d mounted scope on it --not that familiar with that caliber..however reading on it --it has good stuff written about it since its introduction in 1905...

Whatever info you have woud be greatly appreciated...

thx

I have an older CZ550 in 458WM with the hogs back stock. With Warne QD mounts, the rings are 5.110 inches (just under 5-1/8") outside to outside. The rings are set as close together as seems reasonable. My mounts put the bottom of scope tube .430" above the top face of the dovetail which leaves about .080" minimum clearance between the eyepiece and bolt (eyepiece is 1.560" diameter. The front mount is entirely on the flat of the dovetail but could be squeaked back maybe .100" if you're ok with it partially over the radius at back of the dovetail. The rear mount position is fixed by the recoil lug. Hope this helps.

Chuck375,

What caliber is yours in?? What work did you need/do to it after getting it??

The one I am looking at has the full length stock...so as 9.3x57 indicated, that might need a bit more work than yours...

thx

You might as well get a CZ in .458 Lott. The extra long magazine doesn't do very well with .458 Win Mags and they will shift position under recoil. That long magazine is used for both the Lott and Win Mag rounds in the 550. A Win Mag length cartridge can be fired in the Lott for practice and in an emergency. But if I was using a CZ 550 for a dangerous hunt, I'd want the Lott to add a little more insurance that the rifle will function to its top potential using a cartridge that best matchs the magazine length.

RIPP:

A pair of these rifles; one in 6.5x55 and one in 9.3x62, would in my opinion be a hard combination to beat for the rest of my hunting. I'm missing the x62...

I have an itch for a x62 to go along with my x57's and if I get one it'll probably be a 550FS.

Now that I know what work might need to be done.

Ripp, most of my work was optional. I had CZ put a mercury recoil reducer in, barrel band and Pachmayer Decelerator pad as well as do an action job. I then had Ed and Wayne at American Hunting Rifles (AHR) give it their CZ upgrade which included straighten and fill the bolt, replace the safety with a 3 position Model 70 type safety and replace the trigger with a single stage match trigger. AHR did a great job and all of their work was top notch, but in all honesty the stock CZ safety was fine as was the trigger, and the bolt never hit my hand on recoil, so it was really preference/not need on my part. AHR also glassbedded the action and added another recoil lug as well as replaced the rear sight with an NECG masterpiece sight which were all very worthwhile things.

So if I was on a tight budget I would buy a stock CZ (look over a few and get one with a smooth action and nice wood) then have AHR or another good gunsmith glassbed the action. If it was anything bigger than a 375 I'd have them put another recoil lug in as well. You could probably walk out with a very nice and reliable gun for close to $1000 including gunsmith bills.

Hope this helps,
Chuck

Like an original Mauser 98, my 550FS must feed from the magazine. Just like the Mauser, if a round is dropped down the spout and the bolt closed, the extractor WILL NOT SNAP OVER IT.

Are all 550's this way or do some have the extractor modified straight from the factory?

Mine snap over. Get someone to fix it (bevel the extractor face). Sometimes can be hard to close. Do it hard!

I was thinking the '62 would be a great brush gun to use in Africa or for that matter moose here in the west..The one I saw was in a .270..it fit great..and will probably purchase one==I have not had any experience with that model and was curious what others felt..

I have a varmint CZ in 204 Ruger and it shoots remarkable well..actually it will shoot groups as tight as my cooper will in the same caliber..it has a set trigger that works great for shooting p-dogs and coyotes at distance..

9Three; I have a 550 in 9.3x62. You can just drop
one down into the chamber and close the bolt. The
extractor was beveled when I got it from the factory
3 years ago.

Mine is in 6.5x55. No go.

I wonder if they use the same extractor as on x57 basic cases and the slightly larger diameter of the x55 case prevents the bevel from coming into contact.

Mine is a CZ 550 in 458 Win. True, it has the long action and magazine (same as the Lott)but I seat my bullets out to compensate, giving more powder space and less freebore. In effect it becomes a more efficient Lott. Using Barnes bullets, you can crimp in alternate grooves in the TSXs and Banded solids, so crimping is not an issue. I don't use factory loads. So, unless one uses factory ammo only, the CZ in 458 Win has some distinct advantages: namely, better efficiency and potentially better accuracy as the heavier bullets are closer to the lands.

Hello Folks,

Today I picked up a 6.5x55 mm CZ 550 FS that I had ordered. It is beautiful, and I'm looking forward very much to shooting it. It came with a 50 m, three-shot test target that measures 1.186", so I'm hoping I'll do better (I'm confident I will).

I ordered the CZ rings, which I was told come in only one height. I have mounted a 1-4x Leupold Vari-X II, and the rings look way high. The scope looks funny, but it comes to the eye very well indeed, as do the iron sights. The iron sights make a fine sight picture also. I may try to locate a set of lower rings, as I can come down 1/4" and still clear the bolt handle.

When I get some cases (Monday) I'll check to see if the extractor will override the rim of a chambered cartridge. I plan to shoot the gun on Tuesday.

Take care, Tom

I think you'll like it, Tom.

I'm curious as to whether your rifle's bolt will close on a round dropped up the spout. Mine won't.

Have you weighed the trigger; set and unset?

Yes. The unset pull weight is 3.5 lb and the set trigger requires 1.5 lb to release. There is noticable creep both ways, but not enough that I object to it. As the trigger is adjustable for pull weight, release travel, and over travel, it appears I can correct the creep if I wish. The pull weights are fine as they are.

Take care, Tom

My CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55 mm Swedish Mauser weighs 7 lb, 4 oz, as claimed by the factory website. The 1-4x Leupold Vari-X II scope with CZ rings weights 14 oz, for a combined total of 8 lb, 2 oz. (My RCBS trigger scale only goes up to 8 lb, so I had to weight them separately.)

I checked the barrel channel by slipping in a crisp dollar bill, and running it from muzzle cap to the action. There are no tight spots. I have not pulled the gun from the stock, so I don’t know what the bedding looks like.

I’m going to shoot it before I work on it. Rod, maybe CZ is listening to you!

Take care, Tom
