A Pair of George Hoenig Rotary Round Action Guns
      #104195 - 04/05/08 06:04 AM

As requested here are photos of my pair of Hoenig Rotary Round Action DRs. The larger is chambered in 9.3X74R and the smaller in 17HMR. Both are built as good as any "Best Gun" from ANY manufacturer I have ever experienced. And yes, I own several British Best quality guns from 'the era' and from 'the' builders (Purdey, Rigby, H&H and WR) and from what I consider today's 'Best' (Martini Hagn, etc.) The fit and finish on George Hoenig's guns must be experienced to be appreciated. The action is unique, ingenious, and incredibly smooth functioning. Shooting is a joy, and sitting around just cleaing it afterwards is a tactile and visual delight.

As you can see from the pictures, the 17 is proportioned perfectly, and built to be shot by an adult, but lighter and 'slimmed down' rather than misbalanced or truncated. The two are both perfectly balanced, swing more like a good shotgun than a DR, and the scope mount is another bit of engineering genius from George, snap on in a second, secure, and simple.

Different size, same basic case:

9.3:

'Baby Bear':

The pair, obviously the 9.3 is on top:

Dave

Thanks for posting. Certainly they are unusual double rifles and quite "unique". Especially the .17 rimfire.

What weight is the .17?

(I will copy your photos to the NE server, so they can stay archived here for the future)

Beautiful rifles Dave! Thanks for posting pictures. What do you think about the actions and their strength relative to more conventional designs? The lock-up looks like it has alot in common with a rifle bolt.

There is an article in an early issue of the German Gun Collector's journal about the design of this action. Looking at the way this locks up, and reading the article, it would seem that the design is incredibly strong and will take a long, long, time if at all to "shoot loose." I don't claim to be an expert in the area, but I would say it is far superior to the normal actions as, it would seem impossible to 'open' or work loose because of the inherent nature of the design.

The cartridges sit inside a carrier/extractor at the end of the barrel section of the action. When open, you place them into the carrier, and when the gun rotates 'back to battery' the bbl and action are locked together with the two sections held by what does indeed work like a bolt action lug arrangement, one where the 'lugs' are very deep, as shown in the photos above of the breech section. So, as I said, given the very strong 'bolt lugs' and the depth of the lock up (the depth of the receiver section can be seen in the photos, it runs the entire depth of the section ahead of the wood of the forend, just when it would 'shoot loose' would be beyond my shooting lifetime.

The article from GCA was, I believe, on line by Googling the name of the design, and explains it fairly well. If not, Mike at Finefireams has a lot of 'time under belt' on these and may be able to offer a better explanation. Dave.

About as non-traditional as you can get, but I love those 'traditional' lines! They look great. What's more, they look like they were designed around a low-mounted scope. First DRs to look 'correct' with a scope, to my eye!

Just gotta take another look...!

In response to a question sent privately, I do not know who does the engraving. It is beautifully executed and quite 'classic' as the note notes. The wood is done quite well as the overall metal work, which I know is George's handiwork. I would assume like other small or one man operations, the stocking and engraving is done by someone else. And in this case, to George's exacting standards. Dave

The original design did incorporate the scope mount. As far as I know, all the DRs were built with the scope mount included. The shotgun versions obviously leave the scope off. Dave

An exquisite set. A rare and neat sight to see two together, and they appear to be very little used if at all. It will be interesting to see where these go money wise, in a few decades..

The 17 was just acquired, and has under a hundred rounds through it. The 9.3 has had considerably more rounds through it. I have had it for about two years and it is one of my favorites (you can tell it has been used more by just a smidge of markings on the breech face of the latter, which may well come off with a bit more elbow grease from my son, who shot it last and is not as fussy as when I clean up after a shoot.)

As to 'appreciation' of the Hoenig, who knows. The rarity factor works two ways, one would think it would enhance value but being so rare and unappreciated for that reason, it may be a negative factor. On the other hand, anyone who has seen them wants to try them, and the action is just so smooth and so easy to get used to that they will 'sell themselves. Dave

I must have missed these in the original post
Not traditional/classic but as others have said - truly beautiful!

Preferring for looks (as others on these forums) hammers, these certainly are easy on the eyes, and the low scopes are the only ones I have seen that look really right on DRs

Colour me green also
