Hello all,
I'm a double rifle fanatic, but I dabble in bolt guns (used to do more).
I have always admired the classic Mannlicher Schoenauer full stock carbines - the 1903 in 6.5 x 54mm.
I think I might have to play out this fantasy by adding one to my collection. I have never owned a M-S.
Can some of you give me an idea of what a 1903 full stock carbine in excellent condition will sell for in the U.S. these days?
Do you think it should have a claw mounted scope?
If anybody has one to sell, I'm your huckleberry!

I think a 1903 in 6.5X54 would be hard to find for less than $1200, and probably a good deal more. A claw mount is not a bad, but a decidely expensive choice. Redfield once made a mount for this action, but they are difficult to find. My personal choice is a G&H side mount, several of which I have used for decades with no problem, even on my .458 WM and my .450 Watts.

A nice '03 in 6.5 with a vintage Kahles scope, "full Austrian rig", would set you back $2000-2500. I recommend a scope for protecting collector value. A gun like this would certainly be a keeper. I do have one, but as Charlton says, "from my cold dead hands".

I agree 100% with Don. I can put you on to a guy in Ohio who makes CNC copies of the Redfield mount (I got one for my Greek conversion project) but that is like putting a Togo on Kierra Nightly! (sp???)
Check out http://www.gunsinternational.com/results.cfm?cid=172. You will see a William Evans custom at over $5000 & a 1908 8X56 (same action as the 1903) with claw mounted scope for a very attractive $1500.
I own two 1903 rifles in 6.5X54 but neither is a full stock & neither of them has the original claw mounts. I have put the Redding mounts & a new Brownells bolt handle on the Greek conversion & it will get a full English Walnut stock this year. I have left the 1924 made sporter in its original condition with a cocking piece peep sight as shown in this thread. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....=true#Post87179
I now have a 1910 9.5X57 take-down with tang pop-up peep sight & that will not get a scope either. One day I hope to get a rifle like Don's!

Hi Cpt Curl,
I fixed the link NakiHunter posted with pics of my 1903.It has a interseting cheekpiece and some nice workmanship.As best I can tell from emailing some M/S collectors is it was shipped as a barreled action to Van Heffner and built there.

Your rifle is one fancy rig!
My untold secret is that I have purchased a nice M-S. It hasn't been delivered yet, so I haven't even seen it in the flesh. I should have it in a week or so.
What I bought might not suit you pre-war fanatics. I hope it will suit me. It's a Model 1961 MCA Carbine in .358 Win. with a Kahles 4x Helia scope in very nicely done claw mounts.

I do intend to remove (but keep with the rifle) the white line spacers. Can't stand them!
I'm still looking for a nice vintage 1903. Have my eyes on one, but not sure.

that is one very nice M/S rig,and in a neat caliber ! My father in-law hunts (still at 82!) with a savage 99 in 358 win. I kid him about those silvertip bullets.Great Scope and claw mounts intact you have a winner there Capt.
Will keep an eye on that website,never know if my oil stocks keep going up maybe I can finnally get in the real nice double rifle club.
Thanks for posting the pics and apprecaite the compliment on my M/S one day I hope to ungrade my collection to one like yours.

if you need a scope mount: Mannlicher Schoenauer scope bases for split-bridge MS's. CNC machined to exact tolerances. These are Redfield style and will fit guns drilled and tapped for Redfield bases. These can also be modified to fit the 1903 Greek military.

This is mine MS. This is a very strange rifle because this is a 1903 model in 6,5x57 (not 6,5x54 MS) caliber, fitted with claw mounts and a 1,5-6x42 Hendsoldt rifle scope.
This is before restoring.
And restored.
I have this rifle for sale in Spain.

What do you think one should offer on a vintage Kahles equipped Mannlicher Schoenauer which has been restocked (looks like some kind of Bishop or Fajen replacement, yuck). The scope mount is of a European kind, and very tall. All the metal looks good and unaltered. It's just that it would require restocking by a good stockmaker.

I just picked up a MS MCA carbine ca 1966 in 30-06.
I have a MS M72 carbine with the original scope mount that I just love and now I begin the quest to find something for this one.
I know that the Watt Walnut company has the Redfield type of base -- do the holes line up with the pre-drilled ones of the MS MCA ? I know that Racknagle and Talley must sell them, but I would guess they would be in the $400-500 mark. Any other suggestions?
Is there an aftermarket replacement for the plastic tang safety switch?
Also, it was missing the front sling loop and screw -- is it possible to find these any where or would they need to be made?

Greetings all. I have a greek 1903 carbine in 6.5x54mm the stock as been altered somewhat prior to be buying it. The through hole for the sling swivel has been plugged on both sides of the stock. I still have the swivel and the attaching nut that came with it. The cleaning hole re channel has been filled with walnut and glued in place. And I think that the band that goes around the upper and lower buttstock had the screw hole plugged at one time. I managed to open up this plugged hole so the origional screw could be used as it was intended. To hold the band in place. Stock was cleaned and lightly sanded but still looks good. About the on lt bad thing is that there is a chip missing from the bolt head. Plus the bore looks like the bottom of a coal mine. Have 4 boxes midway 160 grain round nosed ammunition with this rifle as well. Question is I don't have the money to properly restore it or convert it to a sporter. Suggestions and comments are welcome. And I just might have the origionall cleaning rod. Frank

Well, I have a range report from my rifle.
I loaded up some try loads with my prediction of success:
WW Super brass; CCI 250 primer; 46.0 BLC(2); 250 Hornady.
PERFECT! So pleasant to shoot!
Good accuracy, good velocity, everything is fine.
What a great woods rifle, and really rare in .358 Win.

The last one in good nick I heard sold for A$1600.
Advice given to me is try to source one from Germany or Austria and if used from High Seats even a 90 year old may not have been shot a lot.

Question to those in the know:
How does one remove the white spacers from a M-S?
I unscrewed the buttplate, and it seems the white spacer is integral with or glued to the black buttplate.
On other guns I have been able simply to remove the spacer as it is separate, and it comes right out from between the buttplate and grip cap without issue.
Guess I ought to stick with double rifles!!!
Any suggestions?
