D. rifle builders: What do you use for rib material?

Double Rifle builders: What do you use for rib material; where do you get it? Sometimes the ribs taken off shotgun can be used, but most of the time it is too narrow. I need a source for good ribs for double rifles, of proper width.

I use 1/32" X 1/2" Strap. Just 1028 hot rolled. You get it at any steel seller.

To make the concave form just take a piece of 3/4" round stock and use it as a press, and hammer the strap into a round mill cut in a 6" long piece of steel. Make the cut with a 3/4" or 7/8" ball end mill. The rib will not look perfect, but you need to fit it anyway, so it's tight to the barrels. When it's soldered up nicely at the edges, take a large rat-tail file to smooth out the bumps, and then a piece of 120 grit Wet-or-Dry over a 3/4" dowel, to make it all pretty.
It's a lot of hand work, but not really very hard to do. If you just take your time and it comes out beautiful.

Steve

and then you have BFIM (also italy)

For the last two double rifles that I've built, I bought both the top and bottom ribs from Tom Ondrus at Crown Press. The price was fair, the service was prompt and the quality of the product was good. The top ribs, particularly the area of the express sight base, needed some additional configuring in order to satisfy my sense of aesthetics but I was pleased with what I received from Tom and I am certainly pleased with the end result.

Concave bottom ribs are easily made by cutting a sliver out of a length of appropriately-sized steel tube.

No bumps to smooth-out, Steve.

That's a good idea.
What are you using to cut them out?

Sorry for the delay, here is the contact information:

Tom Ondrus, C/O Crown Press,
P.O. Box 126,
Austinburg,
Ohio 44010, USA.
Phone: 440-275-1400
Fax: 440-275-1511
e-mail: crownpress@alltel.net.

This info is about two years old so please do not fault me for any errors or ommissions. For a couple of dollars, Tom will send you photo-copies of his catalogue. It's worth your while since he has some useful and interesting trinkets for the tinkerer!

PS: He usually has some interesting, used double guns and rifles for sale as well.

I've tried Toms (He's a great guy BTW) stuff its good, I also have steel strips, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4". Quarter ribs are made from 3/8" square stock milled and ground to shape...mostly by hand.

I am however, engaging a CNC milling company to make complete top ribs with quarter rib as an experiment.
