Caliber suggestions?
      #10152 - 26/02/04 04:10 AM

I have a Ruger #1 action that Jim Wisner worked over many years ago. Recessed safety, steel adjustable trigger, all the important holes reamed and fitted with new pins and/or screws. Plus, I have a stock pattern for the #1 that M. Ottmar built for me.

Reading all of these posts on the single shot forum has got me wanting one again. I'm not very interested in making it a big bore. What caliber would you make it?

How about a 7X57? With the appropriate throat, you can throttle it up or not as the case may be. It would be a neat lightweight toy to run around with.

Or, how about a 7x65r... It is a great rimmed SS round for N. America. I particularly like the 300 H&H FM, also...

That would make a right slick 25 Souper!

280 Ross or 333 Jeffery (but with a .338 groove diameter barrel), depending on whether you want a small or medium bore. I also love the 375x2.5 Flanged Nitro Express (270 grain at 2000 to 2200 fps). Sounds like a great project.

Roger,
I'm going through a similar decision making process. Check the Rifles forum under the Stupid Questions thread.

For right now, I'm trying to settle on a 7mm chambering. I have a 7x57 in a Ruger RSI that is a gem, but wanting to add to that. Was thinking about the 275 H&H, 280 Ross, 280 Halger, 280 Jeff, 275 Rigby Magnum(?), or some type of wildcat based on the older British chamberings.

Decisions, decisions.

9.3x74R.....a perfect "medium" bore.

300 H&H FM is a nice pick, but I'd be more inclined to go with a flanged 8mm...

Hey Roger,

I've always wanted to do a 25 Souper just be different. I've got an old #1 Roberts that is a candidate but it's a very early #1 so I keep hesitating.

I have always wanted a 275 H&H, also. Life is full of tough decisions, eh?!

On another note, I spent some more time perusing the photos of your engraving. You artists amaze me, man, simply amaze me.

I got the S&K rings on the 500 #1 and I'm likin' 'em so far. Still shoot-testing them and the Leupold glass.

The S&K rings are very trim and minimal. The design really lends itself to engraving. I may just have to rearrange priorities and have a serious chat with ya about dressing up that Ruger. I've never had any engraving or scrollwork done and I think it may be time.

I've been a good lad and I deserve a little pretty

If you are not in need of a long range rifle, the 9,3x74R is an excellent choice.

That relatively new Nosler 250 PP BT 9,3 bullet has made the 9,3x74r into a two dimensional caliber in newer and stronger guns.

I get it rolling up to almost 2600 fps in My Valmet and Tikka...only 2450 in the older Merkel, however. Need to respect my "elders", after all.

In your rifle it would be a stomper, for sure...

Amen DBBill, my vote goes to the 9.3 x 74R, great for Moose mauling to pig popping.
