Flushing dogs
      #100864 - 30/03/08 06:54 PM

Well i might be getting another dog soon!

i need a dog that will flush rabbits and wallabies( small Kangaroo) out of thick scrub, black berries bushes etc
i don't want something that's going to work to fast as i hate chasing the dog all day most hunters here use hound spaniel cross type dogs

the law forbids the dog attacking an animal unless it has been shot first(rules are not much fun here)so the dog must not attack...or i can get in very deep poo very fast

so oh worldly people of great knowledge! what's the options tell me what you think

PS i currently own a mastiff x wolf hound and a bull mastiff( has cancer the vet said he does not have long) my last dog R.I.P was a Weimaraner so i have some experience with stubborn annoying dogs that give you more back than you some times deserve

cheers all steve

hi missionary

i would suggest a FT spaniel for those specific needs. if you get one from good stock, the chasing all day wont be a problem.

best regards

peter

sorry my bad

field trail spaniels, that should steer you clear of anything not hunting related. we use them alot here for the pheasant and rough shooting.

the FTs job is working under the gun(within 30 yards) and they do it wery good.

best regards

peter

I've seen some excellent springer spaniels do that sort of work.

My little runt Springer was the best, most useful dog I've ever had. At 30 pounds, she hunted ducks, grouse and rabbits most eagerly until 11 years old & only stopped as I felt she lacked the stamina to carry on in the field. What a wonderful companion a Springer is. Foxton's Lady Jessica was a part of our family for 16 1/2 years and is still sadly missed. I can only justify her very much longer than normal life to the best quailty food we gave her. Love helps too.
: Note that they are a flushing breed, just what you want, but if they catch what they're after, they'll kill it. Lady had a mallard clamp it's beak onto her ear while retrieving it and after that, any crip, rabbit, grouse, or duck was head-crunched first. They are wonderful jumpers and a great joy to hunt with.
: Good Springers, field trial champ stock, will quarter on filed game without training, fetch multiples with little or no training and are soft-mouthed almost to a fault.
: My bro hunted with Lady's cousin, Foxton's Brandon Flint same basic stock and also a wonderful retriever and friend.
: Springers rule - but do shed a bit - oh well.
: Springers usually think they're pups until they hit 10 years of age, then die in the next year or two of old age.

To train your dog to stay close . you must walk with it from a young age and change direction regularly dont run after it must learn that the fun is with you and not vice versa. I did it with my gsp and she newer goes further that 30m from me

25 yards ahead for upland game is about right. Our English Springers did this automatically, quartering back and forth. I am told a lab can be taught this, while spaniels do it out of instinct. Too, most delightful, is the jumping (springing) when in tall grass or weeds. Most field dogs have a slightly longer tail cut than bench-trial dogs. This 'flag' is held aloft for you to see locate them.
: When retrieving, it didn't matter how far away the birds fell - strong and resilient dogs for their size.
