Okay I'm asking... again [Re: 500Nitro]

Please if one or more of you has loaded factory duplicate ammo using smokeless powder for the 500 BPE, please share your recipe. I am serious about getting this old girl back to work and I'm about the wear it out just looking at it.

Thanks to all.

I finally did it myself [Re: pistolchamp]

After the usual booboos getting supplies and equipment I loaded ten rounds of ammo using black powder and the 460 grain gas check bullets I bought from Huntingtons.

The left barrel printed a 2 1/2" group two inches high at 50 yards and the right barrel printed a 3" group three inches high at 50 yards, both quite well centered on target.

As far as I am concerned the load development is finished. I couldn't be happier.

I didn't get a chance to chrono the load. I'll do that soon enough. From the recoil... this old lady has plenty of oomph to do the job.

I cleaned her gently with a nice warm water bath, oiled her and put her on the rack to enjoy.

and I did it again [Re: pistolchamp]

As usual I cannot be satisfied until I've tried it all, so I loaded six rounds of the 440 grain cast gas check bullets, six rounds of the 550 grain cast gas check bullets and six rounds of the 440 grain Woodleigh bullets.

ALL, repeat ALL performed perfectly, decent grouping and well centered... with, believe it or not the best groups from the 550 grain bullets. I was a bit surprised as the gun has a 30" twist and I thought it might be a bit slow for this heavy bullet.

As for the gun already being "proofed", yes it was and I didn't even come close to that. Filling the case to where it compressed the Shockley American Gold Powder about 3/16" it shot great, kicked as expected and it is ready for lion in Tanzania.

I'll worry about a smokeless load in the future, for now this old gal is up and running once again.

117 years and still running strong.

Sounds great. I'd love to see some photos!

Not having anyone available when I usually get to go to the range makes pics hard to take, not for long... I'm going again soon and will get some ACTION pics.

Your groups sound OK to me. I always like my rifles to shoot higher in case of longer shots. However, I seem to recall that the Brits liked to take a very fine bead, putting the foresight right in the bottom of the V. If you are levelling with a flat top, in the modern New World fashion, that might account for the high groups. Hope these comments are not too obvious.
