Difference Between 416 Taylor and 416 Remington?
      #84849 - 29/08/07 08:15 AM

I don't think I need a 416 of any flavor, but can someone tell me the dimensional difference between the 416 Taylor and the 416 Remington? The little bit I've read leaves the impression that both are based on a necked-down .458 Winchester case (and apparently the .338 Winchester can be necked up) to put 416 firepower in a standard-length action. Is that correct?

The .416 Taylor is based on the "short" 2.5" (approx) belted case like the .264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .338 Win Mag, etc. The .416 Rem Mag is based on the 2.8" (approx) full length belted case like the .375 H&H, .458 Lott, etc.

From what I understand, the .416 Taylor is not bad to shoot.

Thanks Bob. I didn't realize the 416 Remington was built on a magnum action...was the purpose to approximate 416 Rigby performance in an easier to get case?

Absolutely.

I don't have a Rem .416, but what a wise marketing move by Remington.

I have a Dakota Safari .375 that weighs 8.5 Lbs.

I shoot a 450 nitro in a 11 Lbs double rifle; I can't imagine shooting a .416 in a 8.5 Lbs rifle.

I believe the remmy was just a remington 8mm necked up to accept the 416 head. I've got one, and I love shooting it. It's pretty much the limit of my comfortable recoil range. I've also got a 470 nitro, and I love shooting it, but I don't get as much 'pleasure' out of shooting it as the 416, particularly off the bench. The Taylor probably has a little less recoil than the remmy, just as the remmy has a little less recoil than the Rigby. The differences are so negligable that one may not notice, or the Taylor could have worse felt recoil than the remy due to different guns, stocks, etc. In general though, I understand that the Taylor has less felt recoil because it burns less powder. All that said, in my opinion, these recoil issues really can't be objectively quantified.

THE 416 REMINGTON IS BASED ON THE 8MM CASE--I HAVE SHOT AND USED THIS CALIBER FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND AGREE --IT WORKS GREAT--IT'S PERFORMANCE ON GAVE IN VERY DECISIVE TO SAY THE LEAST--FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, REMINGTON BASED THEIR PERFORMANCE AND MARKETING AFTER BEING PRODDED BY SEVERAL WHO WANTED A MORE READILY AVAILABLE 416 .. SHOOTING THE 416 IN A BLASER, REMINGTON, AND WINCHESTER.. I HAVE NOT FOUND THEM TO BE UNPLEASANT TO SHOOT..

I have one (416 Taylor) and I have made a bunch of them in years past. The Taylor is by far my favorite 416 of them all.
You can make a very nice rifle and use a standard length Mauser to do it. That means you get more gunsmithing and pay less for parts in any given budget, and the bullet is that same one as the Rigby or Remigton at the same speed (or at least very close to the same speed. Mine measured in at 2400 FPS with top loads)
Here's a few pics of mine, before checkering, when it was new.
It weighs 8 3/4 pounds and I can and have fired it 50 shots in a morning and not had it beat me up.
It kicks some, but not bad. Less than a 458, and it kills VERY well.

The only advantage of the .416 Rem is factory ammo and lower pressure at any given velocity.
; My choice would be a good Mauser 98 in .416 Taylor. Was going to build one back in 1973, but bought a custom .458 2" on a VZ '98 instead - never looked back, never been without one. 350's at 2,300fps, 400's at 2,200fps and 500's at 2,060fps.
; My advice, go with the .416 Taylor for any country - or for North America only & still better yet, the .416 x 2".
