I don't see how in the world a 416 Taylor is going to match 416 Rigby and 416 Rem. Mag. ballistics without extremely high operating pressures for hunting under all conditions in Africa. By every known law of physics, it couldn't be any other way.

Nor do think it's very smart to select any rifle for safari use that does not have available to it properly headstamped ammunition, plus creates a potential boondoggle that means, in practical terms, that a potential resupply of ammunition for same is only avilable on your reloading bench back home - some 10,000 miles away! Brilliant, huh?

I realize that part of the draw of the Taylor is the fact that it'll fit into a standard-length action, which to me is a step-over-a-dollar-to-pick-up-a-dime strategy. So what if it will? If the net result leaves you with all of the other previously-mentioned Taylor drawbacks, who in their right mind would care?

Get a good, solid, Mauser-type action, send it to an expert custom riflesmith, and have him totally rework it to accept the much more practical and logistically smart 416 Rem. Mag. instead. A 416 Rem. Mag. does not mean you have to resort to a Model 700.

My own 416 Rem. Mag. was built on a Model 70 action that was reworked completely, including a specially-made custom magazine box and follower, an opened-up loading port, bolt-face, feed-rails, bolt-stop, ejector, and extractor. It feeds perfectly, holds an extra round down, and it's just as light and handy as any 416 Taylor. The bolt-throw's a half-inch longer, which scarecly qualifies as some earth-shattering big deal! If you can live with the slightly longer bolt-throw on a 375 H&H, you can live with it on a 416 Remington, pure and simple. Besides, once the action work is properly completed, it NEVER has to be redone again, although you can surely rebarrel as needed, as many times as is necessary............

Allenday:

Good, sound arguments for the longer versions. More or less the same cases made involving the .308/.30-06, .358 Win/.35 Whelen, etc.

I had the tenth one ever built , purty little critter .. Someone did a five finger discount on it , and I have never built another one .. Tho' I have always said I will one day ..

2400 fps with a 400 grain bullet can be done with no pressure issues at all ..

As a matter of fact, even Ken Waters got 2,400fps with 400gr. in the Ruger factory test 1-up rifle, and his loadings are usually kept softer than most people load. If Ken can do it, anyone can. That was before some of the new extreme powders (and others), which makes that velocity even easier - at pressure not higher than factory magnum pressures of 63,000PSI.
: I know darn well the .416 Taylor will make 2,400fps with 400gr. bullets. John Whooters was also able to get it, and used that loading very successfully in Africa for several years as did other hunters back in the 50's through 70's.
; The fact that a larger case will do it with less pressure means squat. Of course a larger case will do it with less pressure - that's plain physics. That the smaller case will do it, is also plain physics.

You are quite correct Daryl.
However, I usually only run my 400s at 2300 FPS. Again, I can't tell any difference in it's effect on game even when I have seen the effects of the 416 Weatherby in comparison.
A friend of mine used the Rigby the the Weatherby, and I shoot the Taylor. All the hits on all the game have been about the same in their effectiveness and all the bullets but one (from the Weatherby) have exited)
At 2300/ 400gr. My Taylor kills as well as anything I have seen in the 416s. The 505 Gibbs kills a bit faster in some cases, and makes a bigger wound, but even my 458s and 460s have not seemed to be much better on game than my 416 Taylor. Maybe a little, but I think I would have to kill a lot more animals to be sure. However, I LIKE the Taylor better. It's lighter than the CZ 602 or the CZ 550 magnum. It kicks no harder even though it's abut 2 pounds lighter. Yes, it "only" holds 4 rounds, but I have NEVER fired them all, and I reload on the run pretty well anyway, which is easy to do with the Mauser 416.
So, for an all around rifle, I have to say my 375 or my 4156 are without a doubt my favorites of extra large or dangerous game, and I use my 270 Winchester (also on a Mauser) for everything else.
(if I am not using a flintlock)
