Funny story about my double rifle.
      #70729 - 03/02/07 11:51 AM

Well, actually it happined when my friend Dave owned it. This was back in the early 70's and Dave lived in Memphis at the time. He hunted somewhere in Mississippi, only an hour or so drive. Well, it was a hunting club with several members and guest at times. Dave had decided to try the .500 double this day. It looks like an old double barrel shotgun from a distance and most people have never seen a rifle like this. He was in the woods at daylight and waited till lunch to walk back to the little club house and eat. There was sombody there who was a guest and he had a new Marlin lever gun in the recently, at that time, introduced .444 Marlin. It's no weakling but....Dave said this guy had a live round in his hand waving it around raving about how powerful it was, would go through this, kill that etc. Dave was sitting on the ground eating a sandwich and listening. He said "I listened to that s&*% for a while and got all I wanted. I called the guy over to see the cartridge he was going on so about. He handed it to me and I really was curious so I gave it a once over, stood up and grabbed my double which was leaning against a tree. Opened the breech, withdrew one of the long .50 rounds, placed it between my fingers and dropped the .444 down the barrel. It rattled down the bore and fell out on the ground, I reloaded the double, handed the guy his cartridge and sat back down. The guy never made another sound". I always got a laugh about that. I guess the old saying of "Use enough gun!" is still working.

Nice story. While at my gun club there was a special shoot going on and the members range was closed. We went down to the public range and set up. The range master walked up in the snide uber elite way told me that this was not the shotgun range and I would have to leave. I replied obously you know nothing about rifles and showed him what it was. the silence was priceless.

I'm glad I have my own ad hoc range, and actually prefer to hunt alone. I'm always amazed by these stories. Loud mouth braggers in camp. (thumbsdown)

I rarely go to public ranges either. Don't want to advertize my firearms. But too bad you can't get a video of the stupid looks you get when a yapper at the local range determines that your rifle is NOT a shotgun and sees the size of that double rifle round!!!

Of course any 450class, 470NE or 500NE Double just makes 'em gawk and say
"D*MN!!" and always "Does that kick bad?"

Some just know for sure they don't want to shoot it (freely admitted by one of my irritating hunting acquantances). Yep,they know your probably shooting something entirely out of their league--

Hilarious!!

Along those lines, I have a double slug gun in 12 gauge and sometimes shoot BRASS cased round balls. ...It is one impressive looking "bullet"...

I have one on my desk at work and I have had shooters sit down in my office and at some point it catches their eye and they always exclaim, "Wow!! What the heck is THAT, an elephant round?

I can't wait to load up my first 50-90 Sharps rounds with 525 grain flat nosed bullets in those two and one half inch long brass cases. For a double rifle. Not many double rifles in the finger lakes of NY I can tell you that much.

And, I agree I don't like to shoot at public places or show my guns to most people.

As everyone here well knows just about any of the big double rounds are quite impresive. I have a co-worker who thinks a 30/06 is the end all rifle. Not a bad choice but I brought a .500 to work in my pocket along with an '06. I asked him if that was what he thought was so big and bad. Yeah, there's nothing better. I then placed a .500 in his hand next to the mighty '06. Thus ended the bragging session. Well, I thought it was funny but he just couldn't find the words.
