Saw a .400 H&H
      #70211 - 26/01/07 02:25 PM

I saw a new .400 H&H bolt rifle at the H&H booth at SCI. It was on a mauser 98 action with thumb cut, model 70 safety, iron sights and no scope mount. No engraving and the wood was dark but rather plain. US$46,500.

Dave

The ammunition for both the .400 H&H and the larger belted .465 H&H is made only by Wolfgang Romey in Germany, the same maker makes a number of Holland's own proprietary rounds bearing Hollands own headstamp along with the tell tale pentagon shape that is Romey's trade mark.

The one exception was the .700 H&H N.E, which although has ammo offered by Hollands does still rely upon a run of ammo made in the late 1980's by Jim Bell. Both Romey and Kynoch load for the .700 but hollands do not sell this round by either of these makers

You must have been looking at the standard model, the model de-luxe with presentation grade walnut and engraving c/w Hollands own scope mounts costs here around £40,000, which in present currency is around $76,000 U,S

It is very high quality scratching though There are no doubt some other subtle differences in wood quality etc, but for my own part I would rather spend the extra $30,000 or so on another rifle and maybe a 2 week buff/ plains game hunt.

I have no doubt that the scratches on the receiver are very well organized. However, if built in the U.S. the base rifle would have no more than US$3K in materials cost, plus perhaps 100 to 150 man hours of labor for both metal and stock work. So the margin on the base rifle is impressive.
