Best Choice in a 50 Cal African Bolt Gun
      #60907 - 07/08/06 03:36 PM

To The Group:

I have come across a good deal on a large mauser action that I can build a 460 class rifle. I was wondering what would be the best all around choice right now I'm leaning towards a 500 A-Square just because it is already established and brass can be had. I'd love to be able to use 460 weatherby brass in a 50 but can't find much on what is the closest to form in a 50 cal rifle. Any ideas would be great. I shoot a 416 and will work up to full power loads what ever way I go.

Thanks

Brad aka Pill Shooter

For a reloader, a .500 A-Square is the best option because of quality brass being available. But you will get better resale if it is a .505 Gibbs.

What about a 450 Rigby?

If it was me and the gun was to be a high end custom with quarter rib etc then I would want a 505 Gibbs.

On the other hand if the gun is to be at the low end and a play thing and mucking about with loads etc. then I would do 500 A2

If the gun is to be a real top end custom job then I agree with 500 Grains that a 505 will have a much better resale value. If the gun is to be an ordinary rifle (like a converted CZ) then I think the 500 A2 would have the better resale value.

Mike

Thanks for the input thus far. I am on the waiting list for a Montana 1999 magnum receiver coming sometime next year. What I really want is a fun 50 to shoot and to some day possibly use in Africa. I am not building a collector more of a shooter. So I might go for the 500 A-Square based on its flexibility and availibilty. I like the 505 but I can buy a CZ ready to go right now. I was thinking about something less common like the A-Square or a 510 wells.

Thanks Brad

I find there is no accounting for the wants of gun people, regardless of need, or convienance! I also find that when one sets his cap for a particular rifle type, or chambering, or both, he will not be sattisfied with anything else, no matter what others may tell him. This is one of those cases, IMO!

I say if your gut feeling is toward the 500 A2, don't let anyone talk you out of it, because you will be saying "I wish I had built that 500A2, ten years down the road.

I'd much rather have the 505 Gibbs, than anything Art ever came up with, including the 500A2, but that is me, not you. If you want a 500A2 do it! Let us know how much fun you had building, and shooting it!

I could not agree with you more. Go after what YOU want, or you will never be satisfied. Who cares if someone else doesn't like it or thinks it is impractical, its up to you.

Why haven't anyone mentioned .500J effery yet?? Splendid round, cheaper bullets, a nicer fitting cartridge in the action.
It also gave a higher velocity than .505 with the original load.

Heard the other day about a competition-shooter who tried one shot with a .505 loaded hard! He was used to nothing more than a .30-06, and wanted to try it. I dont recall the position he shot from, but after pulling the trigger, he had hit smack in the middel of the target, but bled heavily from both nostrils.. He was never EVER going to shoot such a big bore again....

I find my .470 heavy enough
