500 Jeffreys
      #60638 - 01/08/06 05:01 AM

I am starting a 500 Jeffreys this fall and was wondering if anyone may have any pros or cons on this round. I have given some consideration to the 505 Gibbs but feel that going from my life long round of choice 416 Rigby to something in the 500 class should be given great considration.

thanks

Forrest

The 500 Jeff is a fine round. It uses a .510 bullet which is more common then the .505 (Gibbs). I have heard that it is difficult to get to feed so I would invest in an experienced smith(ie: someone who has built a few 500 Jeff's before and knows what it takes to get it to feed) to do the work above all. The Jeff has a rebated rim and less powder capacity/shorter neck then the Gibbs. I asked a similar question a while ago. That should give you some good info;

Also use the search feature of the site. Should turn up more info for you.

Forrest,

The 12.7 Schuler is a great round. My suggestion would be to builld the rifle on a standard 98 action and make a single stack magazine just like Schuler did way back in the "day".

A gunmaker who specialises in making the 500 Jeff on standard Mauser actions is Harry Baelder in Germany. One of the members on this forum owns the rifle on the website. I hope he would step in with his comments.

Cheers!

FWIW, Sabi Rifles in Nelspruit South Africa made me a 500 Jeffery on my Weatherby action and it's just brilliant. They also make them on vaarious other actions like Mauser & Rocky Mountain etc and they can make them with staggered or straight feed mags. They tell me that the straight feed is easier to get to cycle reliably.....but that said, even the staggered feed rifles they make I've seen of theirs work well...... I think it's just a matter of having to put more work into a staggered feed.

I'm not a gunsmith, so can't tell you how they do it, but you could contact them on www.sabirifles.co.za if you want to.

Or, you could have Duane Wiebe make up a gem like this one in 500 Jeffery...

(that's Duane's buffalo in Tanzania, not mine).

A pic of it taken down:

I would strongly consider the straight line feed option.
The most reloable bolt rifles I have handled have been straight line feed.

Gentalmen,

Thank you for your in put and in sight, To date I had planed on Harry McGowen of McGowen Rifle barrels to do the action and barrel work for me. I have spoken to him and he has sucgested 2 actions the Model 98 or a Exspress Mauser action. My thoughs were to go with the new action.

I had a 416 Remington made by harry many years ago. I was very happy with the Gun but not the Rounds performance. But I think that was a personal prefrance there.

Again thank you for your input and I have to say that being new to the Web site and Forum I am very impressed

Thanks again I look forward to your comments and opinions

Forrest

Forrest

I am with 450 No 2.

In my opinion a staggered feed CRF action is the nicest of all to watch working.

But an in line push feed is the most reliable and an in line feed CRF is second most reliable.

Mike

What would you like to know about the rifle? Duane made the rifle for himself for a buff hunt in Tanzania. It's a standard Mauser action (Berlin of early serial #) worked over to perfection. Double square bridge to accomodate the claw mounts. Barrel has integral hardware, including the banded island rear sight and front sight.

The rifle is scary accurate and returns to zero very well. A bit on the light side for the horsepower, weighing 10 lbs, 4 oz's. The metalwork is just amazing.

I'm the owner of the rifle now and fully intend on putting it to good use as soon as I can on a few buff and jumbo.

I have tried to take more detailed photos of the rifle, but my photos never turn out well enough to give due credit to the maker or the rifle itself.

DPhillips,

Your Wiebe rifle is fabulous. I think you should post the photos on the Mauser Forum Photos and Archive forum with details of its construction and workings. Also more photos. If you can't get the photos, ask your kids! Usually the kids can out-do us grayhairs on technical matters.

Best,
Curl
