shot the .458 this morning..... 6 times... the millet was bore-sighted when installed and shot about 20" low at 50yds.... with 510gr roundnose......adjusted lotsa clicks to get it about 3" high at 50....the red dot has a variable intensity switch that allows for different lighting conditions...the recoil was not un-pleasant... but i'm planning on using the 350gr loads for feral hogs...any suggestions for a mercury recoil reducing system?? thanks..jim

Toooo many years ago I had a No1 in 458wm. I loved the big bore and the traditional looks. I knew I was ready in case I ever found a sack of money and could go to Africa, (Im still looking...). I made the mistake of trying to "tough-out" the recoil of the 500grs, and hated it. I sold it to a guy half my size who had the good sense to roll with the recoil and shoots it all day.

I never thought about Mercury reducers then. I cant remember if I even heard of them at that time. I wish I had. I also wish I would have kept searching for lighter bullets.

Good luck!

My 458 Ruger Tropical was bought about 20 years ago. It sports a Fajen stock and is magnaported. It is not a problem with full power loads. This could be the different stock design other than Ruger's.The 350 grainers are a pleasure to shoot and a lot of fun. This gun doesn't have a recoil tube but my 470 does. The Breako Mercury tube fits in the stock bolt hole and reduces recoil enough to make fine to shoot.
