Optimum Barrel Length for a 416 Rigby?
      #56984 - 12/05/06 11:02 AM

I have just ordered a barrel for a 416 Rigby project. What do you guys think the optimal length for a 416 would be taking into account muzzle blast, jump, velocity, etc.?

I have a number in mind but would like to hear what you guys think before I say.

Between 22" to 25" I would pick 24" but depends on balance of rifle.

I would go with 23 or 24 inches, but it would depend on the barrel contour. I like some weight at the end. For me, it seems to balance better that way.

It is going to be an octagon to round Martini & Hagn barrel with all integral components (quarter rib, front sight ramp, low full length rib, swivels, etc.) so it should have some good weight to it.

I originally thought 22 should be good but am starting to think 23 would be a bit better.

21 or 22 inches if you leave it open sights. 23 or 24 if you scope it.

Ndumo,
Why the different lenghts for the different sighting systems?
I thought it should be the other way around. In target shooting you try to make the distance between your hind sight and front sight as long as possible, won't it be the same on a hunting rifle. The longer your sights distance the more acurate you are.

Hi Jaco

Because I lke short, handy opensight rifles. If you are putting a scope on a rifle, you are spoiling its balance anyway, so you might as well have a slightly longer barrel. With the scope, you can then also actually use the slight increase in velocity that comes from longer barrel. (read- longer shots.)

While a longer sighting radius does benefit taregt shooters, I would hardly worry about it on a rifle intended for DG. Rather learn to shoot it quick and accurate than worry about accuracy. What difference will 0.5 MOA better accuracy make at fifty yards? None

I am going to scope it but will be quick detach as I do enjoy hunting with open sights when possible.

How much velocity do you think I am really going to gain if I went from a 22 to a 24 inch barrel?

I thought big bores were far less sensitive to having a shorter barrel.

Also I have a DR that will be used as a close up brush gun.

Propably not more than 70-80ft/sec. Not a big difference, but for the occational 200 yards shot, not to be sneezed at.

I have a 416 Rem with a 20" barrel.

Accurate and handy at 9 pounds but seems ?much louder vs my 24" barrel 458WM with the shorter barrel. Chrono'd ~2225 fps with 400 gr handloads.

I would think a 22"-23' barrel length would be satisfactory.
