ONE RIFLE -3 WEEK SAFARI-WHICH RIFLE??
      #56668 - 09/05/06 05:57 AM

I know a fellow thru a friend who went on a 3 week safari several years ago for Ele,Buff,?lion, and plains game. He took a scoped 375 H&H but said occasionally wished he had more gun.The PH backed him up on the Ele(b/u needed!) and the Buff(b/u not reportedlyneeded). Shots were reportedly taken out to 250 yds on some animals.

If the forum members here could only take one rifle on such a safari what ALL AROUND RIFLE would you take?? Scoped or not scoped?

375 H&H,
375 Weartherby
416 Rem/Rigby
9.3 cal
or
some other rifle cartridge!!

Since Elephant is on the list, the .416 Rigby, and scope it. A friend of mine made his first safari 3 years ago, in Namibia. Plains game was the only thing on the menu, but he took his Ruger 77 in 416 Rigby, and everything he shot at, including Eland, and Giraffe, was a one shot kill. His longest shot was pushing 300 yards.

I would also take a QD scoped 416 Rigby.

Given your cartridge & game selections, really hard NOT to select a QD scoped 416 Rigby. However, if you do not "enjoy" recoil, then the 375 H&H Mag is the next best choice. IMO>

Scoped .416 of Remington or Rigby

With that bag list to collect and only one rifle to take, I'd go with my custom M70 416 Rem. Mag. loaded with 370 gr. North Fork solids and softs @ 2460 fps. It wears a Leupold 1.5-5x scope, which works perfectly.

I wouldn't consider a rifle that only carried open sights. Scopes offer too many advantages to ignore............

I do not take just one rifle even to the deer lease.

You are going all the way to AFRICA for 3 WEEKS.
How much more of a bother is it to take another rifle.
Say 12 pounds for another rifle, scope and soft case [I use a Tuf-Pak], and a "few" pounds of ammo.

For ME it is a NO BRAINER.

On my 2 Safaris, one 21 days the other 30, I took a 450 No2 double rifle, and a 9,3x74R SCOPED double rifle.
Worked perfectly.

On my last Safari I shot some plains game with the 450, and elephant and buff with the 9,3.

I would not take ONLY one rifle on a squirrel hunt.

If I only had one rifle, I would be afraid to leave the house.

I'll take the 416 Rigby as the main Rifle and the 375H&H as backup. Anything can happen in Africa thousands of miles away from home. I will take insurance, if I pick up problems with the one rifle, I still have a spare.

I have two .416s, a Rigby and an upstart Remington Magnum, and I would take both. I would use the Rigby, since I am so hide-bound a traditionalist (within reason, I should add), and pack the Remington Magnum for back up purposes.

With elephant, buff and hippo on license, the .416 would be my preferred minimum.

As for sights, well, I would want irons for the close up stuff with elephant and hippo, but glass for buff, lion and leopard.

So, I would mount my S&B Flash Dot 1.25-4x20mm variable on top, with an Allen wrench in my pocket for more rigid mounts, or with lever-actuated Talley QD mounts. Depending, of course, on whether my CZ actioned .416 Rigby, or my Winchester actioned .416 Remington Magnum, were the rifle at hand.

The only other caliber I might choose would be the .458 Lott. Nice compromise that, for an African DG hunter. Big enough for anything, yet suitable for anything else, at any reasonable range.

And one thing I have learned in my relatively few days afield after African DG is this: Bigger is definitely better.

I would take my 416 Rem, scoped on a safari like that. The 375 H&H is ok but bigger is better.
