Big Bore ACCURACY-HOW MUCH IS NEEDED?
      #55019 - 17/04/06 11:00 AM

If we restrict our field of concern to OPEN SIGHTED big bores used on Dangerous Game at "close" range 45+ cal and up--458WM, 450/470 Doubles, 500 NE,505 Gibbs/500Jeffery/500 AHR, 577NE, etc---

How much accuracy do we need at 50 yds, 100yds,?150 yds??

Do we file sights and zero them at 50 yds? And also see where they group at 100yds?

What are the upper limits tolerated? Is an upper limit of 2" accuracy at 50(4" at 100) adequate for large DG?
What size kill zone is adequate?

Forum members, what do you think?

All you need is to be able to hit a basketball at 50 yards, or a grapefruit at 5 yards. It is irrelevant what the rifle does at 100 or 150 yards.

However, many big bores are capable of putting shots touching at 100 yards.

The biggest influence on the accuracy of a big bore rifle is the person shooting it, IMHO.

I know I can make longer shots with my big bore doubles if necessary.
With my 450/400 I have taken caribou at 150 yards.
With my 450 No2 I have shot an elephant at 120 yards, and a giraffe at @175/180 yards.
Both rifles with iron sights.

What 4seventy said!
How many shooters do you know who can consistently place 4 shots into 2 inches at 50 yds with open express sights, standing offhand? ...or 4 inches at 100 yds? NONE!

Obviously the rifle should be as accurate as possible so as not to exacerbate shooter error, but those quoted accuracy standards with an open-sighted double are unrealistic in practice. Off the bench, or even standing with a post support, or over sticks, maybe...
On required accuracy, 500grains is on the money IMHO, but it is nice know the rifle is capable of much better for that occasional long shot.

Regarding filing the sights, check your ballistic software. If sighted dead-on at around 90 - 95 yds, most of the NEs will not deviate more than one inch from the line of sight out past 110 yds or so. That's the 100-yd leaf on most heavy Brit doubles. All you need.

These days, it's no great trick to come up with a solid, big-bore bolt-gun that'll keep three shots under an inch at 100 yds. with premium hunting bullets. Since that level of accuracy is achievable, I want it, and yes, I get it.........

Why settle for less if you don't have to?
