Recoil How Much is Too Much ???
      #54163 - 05/04/06 02:29 PM

To The Group

I'm putting together a custom rifle in 9.3mm Ultra Mag. I would like to use it for Elk hunting here in Oregon. I can walk +10 miles in a day looking for animals up and down hills. I would like to build a light rifle to reduce fatigue in carrying it. Here's the question I plan to push 250grn bullets around 3000fps generating aprox 5000 FPS of energy. What would be the lightest I should build this rifle. I know recoil tolerance is relative. I can shoot an ultra light 300wm or my RSM 375 all day long without a lot of problems. I just dont want to bust my shoulder, face and behind in the woods with too light of a rifle. I'll bench rest it at the range to get the loads worked out. I am using a remington 700 SPS rifle in 300 RUM (7 5/8lbs from the factory) and having it rebarreled to 9.3RUM.

Questions Are:

Should I keep the rem factory profile and SPS stock (ie 7 5/8 lbs)?
Should I Flute it?
Should I get a Rem 700 safari profile barrel and a BDL Mag Stock?

Any input would be great.

Thanks

Pill Shooter

Don't think the recoil should be that bad depending on how much the rifle weighs. Here is a link to a recoil calculator.

Pill Shooter,
I've given some thought to building a 35 RUM (actually a 35/338RUM) on a Rem700 action. Are you using the full-length 300RUM or slightly shorter 338RUM? I know of a 35/338RUM in Australia and the owner needs to seat deeply to allow cartridges to feed through the magazine, particularly with the 225gr Nosler BT. Have also heard the same regarding the 358STA and 250gr projectiles. My thoughts on barrel contour are along the lines of using the same contour used by Remington for its Safari Classic 375H&H model but extending it to 26". This was a much slimmer contour then used on the RemBDL in 375H&H. I personally do not like carry rifles much above 8.5lb (3.8kg) so that would be my top weight. I find I can carry that weight all day in steep country and it handles well for an off-hand shot when required. Add a decelerator pad and keep the original stock if its currently comfortable. Sounds like a great project.
Cheers.

Sounds like a fun gun!!

Personally I would not shoot a rifle that I could not prevent a flinch from regularly occurring with two rapid sequential shots. The most important is obviously the first but if you are so abused you cannot prevent it with the second then you have too much gun. You can check by sticking a dud round in the mag and having someone knowledgible watch you shoot.

Just my 2cents--

470 CAP

Thanks for the input. I am trying to neck down 375 RUM cases but haven't got there yet. I am using a stock Rem 700 SPS in 300RUM for the action. I made up a dummy round by pounding a Nosler 250grn 9.3mm bullet into a 300RUM case it fit fine in the mag well and feed into the chamber to a point. The rifle is at PAC-NOR barreling to get a new tube. My OAL is less than 3.60" so I hope it will feed and function. If you have any other questions please send them my way.

Thanks

Your well on the way! Try Redding for reloading dies as when I enquired they had 35/300WSM and 35/300RUM dies ready to go. They may very well have 9.3RUM dies and they seem to be basing their RUM dies on the full-length case. I had a play with my Rem700 in 8mmRemMag last weekend and was very pleasantly surprised to find it'll feed a maximum COL of around 3.675" give or take a little. Its this rifle I'm considering rechambering/rebarreling ... although I necked up some 308Norma cases to make dummy 358Normas and they're pretty sweet too! In my case I'm also going to need a RUM magazine box and follower if I go the 35RUM route. Any chance of getting a photo of your magazine box, interested in how different they are from the H&H box??
Cheers...

If you want to save money on custom dies try using a long tappered .366 expander in the .338 Ultra dies you will work the brass a bit more but brass is cheep. You mighe have to open up the seating dies a bit but they are not hardened so it is no problem. If you do not want to try this check with Hornady their custom dies are a lot cheeper then Redding and RCBS does not make custom dies last I knew they got out of it. If you really want an Elk hammer do a search for .366DGW you might like it, 250 grain slugs at 3253 F.P.S. that means 5875 pounds of energy and 2971 foot pounds at 500 yards!

It is the small calibers that are the biggest bores.

Thanks again for the update. I just sent the rifle off to PAC-NOR barreling last week. I can't really remember what the cartridge area looked like. I would be happy to send you a photo when it comes back. I ordered my dies from Lonnie Hummel at Hornady $120 for the set. There is an article on the 35 TUM (towsley sp? ultra mag). Plenty of load data ect.. I can track it down if you haven't seen it.

Keep Me Posted & Thanks

Elmer Keith, who was a short slim guy used to claim that short slim guys had less trouble with recoil than big heavy guys.

Here's some unproven suspicions:
Loosely held rifles will beat you up BAD
Trying to overpower the recoil with physical strength will shake up your insides BAD
Taking all the recoil with your shoulder will beat up your shoulder BAD
One way of holding the rifle appears to be to do a Charles Atlas like flexing of your upper body and arms while holding the rifle firmly against your shoulder pocket
If you can do the above while focusing on pushing your strength down through your feet into the ground, the felt recoli seems to be much less.
Having someone coach you by observing your stance and techniques is VERY HELPFUL (NEVER PICK A SPOUSE FOR THIS TASK!)
All suspicions, no proof

Recoil is often a state of mind matey, I understand what you are saying, but the most shots in a short time that you will fire are on the range. In the field it may be one or two and your adrenalin will be up, unless you are already preoccupied with recoil you won't notice the recoil. I remember a bloke that had problems with recoil, I got him to shoot a large calibre gun prior to his range testing and after that he didn't appear to be too bothered. He certainly shot better. I saw a rifle that an american hunter brought in to Oz, instead of flutes longitudal, these were around the barrel for the length and about an inch apart. Seemed to do the job and was light.

cheers

To my neighbor in Sherwood........

I'd build your rifle to weigh no less than 9 lbs. complete, and even at that, you'll still feel it when it goes off. But it'll combine shootability and portability in a practical and solid package.

Do you shoot at Tri-County?

Allen:

Thanks for the info. Yes I do live locally and shoot at TCGC. Ive been busy so I haven't shot much lately. Do you shoot any big bores there? If so we should compare notes?

Thanks
