Hello-
This is my first post in this forum. I'm been a lurker for a while.
Anyway, I just bought my first DR. It's an O/U Merkel 9.3 x 74R.
Here are some pics of it:

Are there any load/ammo brands out there you guys would recommend I start with?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

OWD,
Congratulations, and welcome to the forum. You chose a most useful caliber for your first DR. I can't say personally what brand of ammo to use, as I have only used handloads in mine. However, if I were going to use factory ammo I would try RWS. You should try to match bullet weight with the bullet weight of original regulation.

Welcome to the party!
First, where are you from? (It helps when making recommendations.)
Second, do you handload? If not, and you live in the US, you may consider Superior Ammo. If you are having trouble getting good groups with your double, you can send the gun to Superior Ammo and they will develop the perfect load for your gun.

Thanks for the input.
New England, good old USA.
If anyone else out there has a rifle like this, please let me know what ammo has worked for you.
The date marks on the bbls say this rifle was proofed in 1977. I don't know what kind of loads it was regulated for, though.
And I don't handload.
Thanks again.

Welcome to NitroExpress.
Looks like you have a nice double there.
I have a much 'lesser' Tikka in 9.3x74R and use 286 gr Woodleigh Protected Points and FMJs in it with an Aussie AR powder. Works very well. But the Tikka barrels are self adjustable so I have no idea if the handloads are in any way 'standard'.

I can't open the picture here from the office, they have a lock on all gun sights except this one, so I can't see the gun. How ever I sold a Merkle O/U last fall that I had used in my first Safari. I used Norma Brass and Woodleigh 285 softs and solids with no problems at all. I think I still have a bag of new unfired brass kicking around, if you would like to buy them, I'll check to see if there still in the gun room. Dies too if your interested.

Hey I just realised that you live in State C. Hell I worked there for Corning for many years before we closed the plant.

Actually I live a little south east of there. The SC is for South Central. I live just outside Hershey PA, where they make the chocolate.
