Hey guys,
I went out to shoot my dad' snew Fraser 303 double today to get an idea where to start for regulation.
I fired some factory winchester 180 grain bullets at 50 yards and the gun shot apart by about 4 inches. Each barrel went into about an inch.
Now I know these factory loads are anemic and that coupled with the worn throat leads me to believe that velocities were quite low.
I am planning on working up a load to see if it closes together but was wondering if there are other 'rules' for smaller caliber rifles.
Would it be worth trying some 215 grainers or would they just shoot apart more?

Worn throats are not a major problem with DR's from what I have found.
I am more concerned if the barrels are worn in the last 1/2 or 1/4 of the barrel.
Re bullet weight, being a 303, what is it regulated for ?
174 gn or 215 gn.
If not specified you can sometimes tell by the age of the gun.
Try 174gn Bullets as 4" isn't too bad for 1st go.

I assume that by "apart" you mean the barrels are shooting away from each other as opposed to crossing?

yes that is what i mean.
The regulation is not specified but I will have to do some reasearch to age the gun.
I just thought that the worn throats might slow the bullets down enough to shoot more away from each other.

Usually a worn throat will increase velocity somewhat.

My Watson Bros 303 will only shoot the 215 grain bullets. The lighter bullets shoot about 5 inches wide and low.

Thanks for that information mickey. There is a peep sight on the rifle and it did seem like it shot a little low for 50 yards.
Ill try working up some loads to see if i can regulate it and if not ill try some 215 grain bullets.

Curl,
I have not noticed this in my otehr rifles, is it something that double rifles usually do?
In my other rifles with worn throats I can often work up to a faster velocity because it is similar to a freebore like the weatherbys use but with factory ammunition i have found velocities to be slower normally.

Bulletproof, this isn't the Fraser that was sold at the Bud Haynes auction by any chance? If so, it was shooting fine a while back. Where are you located? ~Arctic~

I don't have experience with a DR with a worn throat.
Also, you are probably right in your analysis. The worn throat will let you achieve faster velocity before pressure becomes a problem, but load for load I can't say it will render faster velocity.
My earlier comment was not well thought out. I stand corrected.

Well i loaded up some rounds with 180 sierras and went back to the range today.
At 42 grains Re15 the rifle grouped 2" for 5 shots at 50 yards with one flyer going high to pull the 6 shot group to 3"
I think that with more practice with the sights i could do better though bacuse the bead covered 6" at 50 yards and it was hard to get a consistent aiming point on the bull. each right-left string landed about an inch from each other though so it seems to regulate quite well.
